No, it's bashing when the articles you post almost entirely put something in a bad light. Thurrott's in bed with MS, simple as that. He'll do whatever it takes to make the competition look bad. Look at the market share article he posted. He failed to mention these parts:

In a business where profits are almost nonexistent if your name isn't Dell (DELL ), Apple delivers rich gross margins of around 27%. And the Mac business is a key reason Apple saw its cash horde climb to $4.8 billion. Indeed, Apple sold nearly as many iPods as Macs, 733,000 to 829,000 in its 2004 fiscal first quarter, ended December 27, 2003. Despite far lower prices, the iPod actually brought in more revenue ($256 million) than Apple's consumer flagship iMac line ($251 million). And yet it saw its best operating margins in 13 quarters.
The quarterly performance shows the Mac is currently enjoying a growth spurt. Sales grew 12% during the quarter (iPod sales grew 238%, by comparison, but off a smaller base). The sleek PowerBook laptops remain hot items. Sales of higher-end PowerMacs -- used by publishers, ad agencies, and the like -- are getting a lift from the economic rebound.

He owns a PowerBook and iSight, IIRC.

iMac G4 - 2003-era 1 GHz 17-inch widescreen LCD with SuperDrive, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB internal hard drive/160 GB external La Cie hard drive. Running Mac OS X 10.3 Panther.

iBook G3 - 2001-era 500 MHz 12-inch with DVD drive, 640 MB RAM, 40 GB internal hard drive (2002 replacement of original 6 GB drive). Running Mac OS X 10.3 Panther.

iSight Firewire camera.

iPod - Third generation unit with 30 GB.

iPod - First generation unit with 5 GB.

(that's what he says on his site at least...)

Oh come on guys. What's the big deal. For every one of the "Paul Thurrotts" out there, there are Mac fans with their head up Jobs butt as well. It goes both ways, so there's no reason to just focus on one party. I find those Mac fans much worse than anything Paul has ever done.

Considering you Sig says "Elitist Mac ######" do you consider yourself one of those kinda people

Nah joking aside, I agree with you... there are people who do exactly the same on the Mac platform too, a trip to MacRumors proves that! but most of the time Macintosh people know what they are saying has a least some ground, where Thurrot seems to just make stuff up as he goes along a lot of the time.

And reading one of his posts on that site, he says the iMac was one of his worst purchases EVER! how can he say that? everyone I know whose used a iMac says they loved it, they may quibble at the price, but the computer itself is nothing less that stunning.

tbh, I could see his point on that like I was saying over ichat, you want to upgrade to something faster and you will end up having to shell out for a whole new computer due to the fact there are no cpu upgrades available for it.

Yeah you would, If you were someone who upgrades their computer. But the iMac is a consumer computer, not a pro computer. Most people (I know some want to upgrade but most don't) will stick with the same basic specs that shipped with the computer.

Hell just think how many people are using Windows95 computers still to this day without ever upgrading the hardware, they use it because It works.

PS: Yes I'm well aware of the irony in that statement I made but it's true :p  which is why soon enough the computer market will dry up considerbly unless something BIG comes along that everyone must have, and I can't see that happening myself.

that would be everyone then cos everyone is going to upgrade their computer sooner or later, most of the people that I have sold computers to in the past want the most for their money and even most people I talk to offline, I have talked into computers where they can easily upgrade it thus saving more money than having to go out and buy a whole new computer. Hell you said yourself it was going to be more than 200 quid just to upgrade the ram in your imac vs the 50 it would cost if someone were to spend the same amount of money on a g4 powermac due to the fact they could easily open the case and pop it in themself without having to worry about voiding their applecare. It's because in powermacs, ram upgrades are considered a user serviceable thing, you see :)

the only way that would happen is if the majority of people never upgrade, which isn't the case.

The "elitist Mac ######" think is supposed to be a joke, since every Mac user is supposedly elitist. According to the windows user anyway.

MOST of the time, Mac users have no clue what they are talking about. Like you said, take a trip to a Mac forum and you'll see. They are so in love with their machine, anything bad said about it or Apple is wrong. TBH, I agree with Thurrott most of the time. He makes quite a few good points. I hate seeing so much Mac-positive stuff all the time. He's my reality check.

I would say the iMac would be my worst purchase ever....IF I bought one. I agree with Cat here. Most people eventually want to upgrade their computer, not necessarily buy a new one. Heck, my parents are about as normal as you can get when it comes to using computers...ie, not that informed...and they know it. THEY are the ones who came to me about upgrading the computer...not buying a new one. People want the most bang for their buck, and when all they need updated is the motherboard, processor, and ram, why bother with everything else. That's 300-400 dollars there compared to 800+ for a new system. People buy the iMac because it's simple, cheaper than the Powermac, and it looks cool.

You know, he can type all he wants about how much mac sucks, but unless he decides to think to articles that support his opinions and views of who copied who in terms of windows vs. osx, he is no better than asking hte opinion of a 10yr old.

I used to respect this guy for hte detailed information he would give about upcoming microsoft operating systems, but if i had seen this page first i would think he was 14....

Do you guys really care if Paul Thurrott or anyone who listens to him get brainwashed into hating the Macintosh?

If he wants to be the grime on Gates' shoes, then great. Good for him. It's not as though he'll ever make the slightest bit of difference, out there fighting the good fight for a company that couldn't care less about him; but whatever keeps him off the streets, you know?

Bloggers, columnists, pundits, fanboys.. useless, oxygen-consuming algae. The less Thurrott has in common with me, the better :)

I think Thurrot is MS Appologist #1: I stopped being interested in his articles a few months ago. If you think the man never has anything good to say (and by good I mean 'worth reading' as opposed to 'I love Apple') then don't read his articles, don't post links to them, and don't buy magazines/books with his writing.

He's got a right to an opinion - but I don't have to agree with it or even listen. I'm not listening to him because I think he's a poor technical writer (if you can call him that), not because I don't agree with him.

Remember too that this is the same guy who claimed that HP was going to be bringing WMA to the iPod. We all know how reliable THAT information was, don't we?

I'm pretty sure he wasn't the only one.
