markwolfe Veteran Posted January 27, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 27, 2004 What fan is causing problems? And, how do you know it should turn off? Perhaps something is running when you are in Linux that is using the CPU, and it is warm enough to require the fan... I only say this because there isn't a lot of information here on what services you may have running that you don't know of... (run the command chkconfig | grep 5:on (or something like that) to see what services you have running).
meccax5
i have read up on it and i learned i need to get an acpi patch and recompile it into my kernel but i have no idea how to do it. aparently sony computers have a driver i windows that cools the fan down but there isn't one for linux and instead u have to do it manually. please someone help me. kjordan2001
Why do you need a patch? ACPI is already in the kernel, unless it's actually doing nothing for you
meccax5
no the kernel i had didn't support it.....so i just installed 9.2 cuz it already has the patch but yet the problem persists. under power management it says not all acpi options are on and i need to compile the kernel again but when i go to usr/src/ there is no linux folder. KenLin
acpi is already in the kernel in MDK 9.2, you just need to enable it. check out this page: http://pokeyhokey.mysite.freeserve.com/Tips.html
meccax5
when i go into the services panel there is no acpi service even listed.

meccax5
when i go into power management settings it says this. (Your computer seems to have a partial ACPI installation. ACPI was probably enabled, but some of the sub-options were not - you need to enable at least 'AC Adaptor' and 'Control Method Battery' and then rebuild your kernel.) how do i do this? kjordan2001
I'd recommend you go to kernel.org and get a new kernel.

kjordan2001
Or just download it off kernel.org like I said and extract it and compile it that way, or it may be on your cds somewhere.
