How to.. Start a Blog website?

Recommended Posts

You have to decide if you want to have it on someone elses site or download a script or something so you can have it on your own. I think some sites, you log in on other sites and it just uploads html pages to yours.

My blog ( see sig) uses movable type and i like it alot.

ok, 1st of all, if you do a livejournal, i will personally find you and kill you. there are just a few simple steps you need to follow:

(1) buy a domain name ($14 for 2 years say)

(2) find a host (timdorr has a pretty sweet deal going on, not sure if its still on the table though...)

(3) acquire a web-site making program (unless you can do html, then you'd just need notepad, but the fact that you asked how to do all this makes me think no)

(4) either use a template, or just copy the source code of some webpage you like (modify accordingly), and make the page (some people not might like that idea....)

(5) fill with intresting content about your life

(6) upload to web

Tim is currently not accepting any new signups for now following this announcement at http://servers.timdorr.com

"Well, I'm sure you're all no doubt wondering what's going on with hosting and such now that we have this new venture before us: A Small Orange Hosting. So, let me break down the timeline and plans for you guys:

THE MASTER PLAN:

Firstly, I want to thank everyone for the support they've given me with this hosting setup. It's been widly sucessful so far, and I see no reason to fix what ain't broken. So, I will open up ASOhost as a separate entity to servers.timdorr.com. You guys will enjoy the same support benefits that ASOhost clients will enjoy, but at the same price you're all paying now. Just think of it as "Servers.timdorr.com, Managed by ASOhost". I'm not going to change anything here, and as long as you're still willing to pay the $5/month, I'll leave everything running. ASOhost will initially be run solely by me and the "Junior" support staff mentioned in the other threads. More on that later.

TIMELINE:

-I get ASObill working in a barely functional form. I don't trust PerlBill anymore, so I'm going to start things off right. Most of the functionality is in the staff areas of the script and some of the plugins I'm not giong to need for my own setup, so getting it working for the beginning won''t take quite as long. Howevr, this is my biggest stopping point going forward, so progress on ASObill determines progress on ASOhost.

-I design a suitable website. Forums will be an integral part of ASOhost, as I intend to stress the fact that customers are part of a community. That has worked out very well in the past for many hosts, and I intend to mirror their efforts.

-I hire staff. I'll be placing out an application when this happens. For now, even though I really (really!) appreciate your offers for staffing, I'm going to ignore them to be fair until I can set up an fair and balenced selection process. I intend on hiring those with the best knowledge and nicest personalities (read: learn quick and don't be a dick ).

-Step 1: Opening up for business

-Step 2: ....

-Step 3: Profit!

So, basically we're waiting on ASObill here. Speaking of which, here's another update on the interface and ticketing system: http://asmallorange.com/support.html

It's a "screenshot" of sorts (I just saved an outputted HTML page) showing a ticket in progress. Nothing major, just showing its not vaporware

Anyhoo, that's the plan. I have no estimates on ASObill's development, but I'm shooting for it to be done enough by the end of February (hopefully sooner, though)."

I use www.blogger.com and have it send it straight to my FTP. Then the file just gets viewed in an inline frame, so it's still on my site.

to see an example of that, refer to my site: http://blog.nimasoft.com

(blogger doesnt come with comments, thats an added ASP feature, which i added, but it comes with a XML Feed: http://server.nimasoft.com/blog/feed.xml )

MovableType is a great publishing system also. The only thing I hate is, it uses damn perl/cgi scripts!

thats the only reason keeping me from using it. for now, blogger does it for me!

iMike is the :) ######.

What? your first post and you registered today? Weird..is that you iMike?

By the way, what type of blog do you want to start? Do you just want to sign up for one and make it? Like modblog, blogspot, xanga, and livejournal?

Or do you want to upload the actual publishing system to a server? I recommend the latter. Much more customization. And use your own domain/subdomain name.
