Natural Selection v3.0

Natural Selection: Combat

Natural Selection: Combat is a new fast and furious gameplay mode focusing on intense action. Combat games generally last less than ten minutes, and require very little knowledge to play.

New maps - Six new Combat maps, made just for Combat. Enjoy a combat-simulation on "daimos", battle over rock and water on "core", or enjoy non-stop action on "faceoff".

New upgrades - New Combat-specific upgrades like "resupply" and personal scanner sweep give you help when you need it.

Gain experience - Get experience for killing the enemy, or for attacking their base. As you gain experience, you gain levels. Each new level lets you choose a new upgrade, weapon, or piece of equipment. Even after death, you retain these power-ups.

New NS gameplay

New look - Over 150 new textures and new NS maps give the game a whole new look. Fight in the claustrophic halls of ns_ayumi, catching a glimpse of snow falling outside a catwalk, or take control of the awe-inspiring and incredible ns_agora.

Catalyst-packs - New "catalyst-packs" allow Commander to speed rate of fire and movement of marines for a short duration.

New lerk - New flight model for the "Lerk", allowing smooth and precise flapping and gliding (he also has his bite back!).

New spectator interface - All-new spectator mode is easier to use and ideal for match commentators.

New manual - The manual has been totally re-written to include a "quick start" guide, and detailed information on every weapon, ability and structure.

Other features - New chat and font system, the ability for mappers to pre-place structures in maps, 'votemap' command, new scoreboard, new alien "focus" upgrade, and much more.

STEAM and VAC support

Full Steam support - Official Steam support, including a new NS desktop, friends list, and automatic updating. NS will be listed under the "My Games" section (not as a 3rd-party mod).

VALVe Anti-Cheat (VAC) - VAC means that NS and Half-life are updated automatically when new cheats are found. Any cheaters detected by the system are immediately temporarily or permanently banned across all NS servers.

Balanced and tested

Extensively tested - Extensive playtesting with over 100 NS clans and hundreds of Constellation members will mean the most balanced and fun NS yet.

Massive improvements - Over 200 bugs and exploits have been fixed in this version, along with dozens of other improvements. These include "sinking" structures, better hitboxes for players and structures (even for wall-walking skulks!), skulk prediction fixes, and hundreds more.

Does it have bots?

Some server put bots on but just to raise the number of players seen by steam. The game itself is a little too complicated for a bot. Alot of strategy is required for the class gameplay. With elements from games like Warcraft (the marine commander looks down upon the map and drop structures to be built by marine players and gives orders where to deploy to) and the need for strategically placed building on both the alien and marine side, a bot would just ruin the game completely.

Great addition and continues to become more and more polished. The combat game mode is great for n00bs while classic mode is still the meat and potatoes of this mod. The new steam interface is nice.

Give it a try and be patient. It will take you a week to even learn the maps which is very important (especially when you comm keeps screaming at you to get the F to Aux Gen ;) )

are there alot of players playing, so you are on a team with other people to build a ase and keep it up. hmmm sounds nice.

The basic premise is that the aliens start with one hive. The builder aliens (gorges) can build up to 2 more hives which unlock abilities and upgrades for the aliens. The marines have a command chair and build up their own base. Resources are what fund all upgrades. To win the game, marines must destroy all alien hives or aliens much kill all marines and any spawn portals they have built.

It takes time to learn this game. This is not CS where you run and gun. You must play smart because each player's actions affect the team.

the best mod for hl ever!

cs is like pong comparing to this!

we finally agree man. I bought HL just because of this mod. I never even played HL or any mods till this came out. I saw screenies and was like "hell yeah"

Natural Selection is a great game because, unlike most other HL mods, it requires alot of thinking and fast action and reaction. I love it. When you win a game, you truely feel you earned the win.

I'm showing a TON of players right now for NS. Over 2200 players w00t! Right now it's the 4th biggest HL mod behind CS, TFC and Day of Defeat.

The new combat mode is terrific, I could never really get into NS all that much, but I love the new gametype. It's fast and fun. Can't comment on the old skool gametype much because I don't play it.

By the way, just for comparison sake, CS has 64,000 players right now.....yeah.

I am starting to like combat mode a lot more then the original game mode. I thought they said in this release they were going to have the ability to create games where it is Marines vs. Marines or Aliens vs. Aliens. Perhaps I was mistaken. And why did they get rid of the lerk's spike shooting ability?! I loved that attack.

They got rid of the spikes because it really crippled the lerk. I used to love lerk bite in 1.0x and missed it dearly in 2.x.

As for marine vs marine or alien vs alien, i have no idea what happened to that idea.

I would like to see a MvM or AvA as well but all the co maps were obviously designed for MvA.

I still prefer 'classic'. Combat is fun but doesn't have the depth or strategy of the 'full' game. ;)

The only thing bad about combat is that as soon as a classic map comes on everyoen forgets what its like to play as a team. Yesterday I played a game where only me and one other guy went gorge and dropped res towers.

Cool, if you ever see me again, give me a shout. I tend to be al ittle bitchy in combat mode as a marine because, for some odd reason, i own with the shotgun until morons start nade spamming and I can't see jack **** anymore.

Yea I never realized it was you in the game. I usually play on the Skullz server as DarkMole. I miss my Lerk spikes, I am not able to destroy turrent factories from afar anymore unless if I am a fade with the acid shooter and they don't really fit into vents.
