This could have been avoided if his parents had bothered to give a gift that he wanted, instead of one they wanted him to have!!!

If this kid had asked for a new snow board, and his parents gave him some new skis, would you blame him if he converted them to something closer to what he actually wanted???? Try to remember that it is just a computer (it's not a holy icon, or the secret to world peace), and it was a gift to him... that means it was his property to do with as he pleased.

If I found that my son had done this I'd feel horrible, like a real ass, for two reasons:

1) That I'd spent that much money on a gift without finding out in advance if it was what he wanted

2) The fact that he felt like he had to hide it from me... that he didn't feel like he could just say "WTF dad... this isn't what I asked for!"

ya but it was a 3k machine and he is a computer idiot ... anyone that knows anything about computers ..weather they wanted what they got or not.. would know how good that computer was....could have used it for video editing or something mmmmmm

He's a kid... the fact that it's a $3K machine doesn't mean squat to him, since he hasn't had to earn a living and pay his own way yet, and value is relative. Oh, btw, he DID find a use for it... just not one you agree with. :p

1) They probably wanted to give him something he wasn't expecting, like a really powerful G5 (because everyone likes powerful machines...), with good intentions. It's always nice to surprise someone.
It's still not a gift that he wanted to receive... and it's not that hard to find out what your kid's interested in without showing your hand. It helps if you're actively participating in their life.

Just think about what a nice surprise his parents have coming to them!!!

Yeah really nice way of putting it..very grateful.

I was attempting to convey the basic message... I want my child to feel comfortable telling me when I've dropped the ball. Now if he was to actually say "what the f*ck".... well that'd be a whole other issue!!!

What the heck was stopping him from using BOTH his XP and G5? I don't understand his logic....

What a stupid idiot.

Post this on front page news, this is going to be a classic internet joke....

Oh my god... What did he do? I mean, I never really worked with a Mac, but you just can't do that.

One would never get a Ferrari and rip the engine off just because you prefer diesel power!

Edit: Just saw that timdorr already made that comparison

If someone gave you a $3000 titanium-plated diamond-studded buttplug, with a built-in Wi-Fi webcam, would you feel compelled to use it? Would you follow the mantra that, seeing as how many considered it to be one of the best buttplugs in the world, and it was so expensive, you'd just have to use it?

:woot: :woot: :woot: :woot: :woot: :woot: :woot: :woot:

Was it dumb of this kid to do what he did? Sure... but that's the beauty of being young, sometimes you get to do some stupid stuff. I think it's great that he did this instead of emulating some rediculous stunt that he saw on "Jackass".

I've seen enough friends spend a whole lot more money making "stupid" modifications to cars, motorcycles, planes, etc... to get my panties in a wad over something this trivial.

:shifty:

From what I read he wanted his parents to think he was using his expensive new gift, so did this to trick them. Nice kid they have there. Either that or he's just a spoiled little prat who doesn't care about wasting money. I mean, someone gives you a $3000 gift and you immediately tear it apart, stuff it in a shoe box, and give the remains to one of your friends. I guess that's better than throwing it away though. Still, it must be sad to be that dumb.

This is like getting a brand new BMW and gutting it so you can put a Ford Escort engine inside it.

good analogy.

evn show: i'd still take the 318 engine... the escort has a 2.0L 4, the bmw has a 2.5L 6...

hmmm...I'm willing to bet the article is a joke. He probably just took out all the G5 components, put in PC components, took a bunch of pictures, and restored the whole thing.

Just my 2 cents.
