ok so iam planning to install linux on 2 computers with 2 diffrent tasks.

i got a server wich is used to download of ftp's and mirc( currently windows 2000, its an pentium pro 200 mhz with 384 mb ram and scsi hard disks)

and i got a good game computer. i want to make it a multi boot and i have already tryed some times linux.

i tryed red hat 9, mandrake 9.0 and 9.1.

i managed to get my nforce board to work with 9.1 of mandrake but last time something did go wrong.

it didnt install my hard needed internet drivers:S

is there any linux compatible with this hardware:

amd 2400+@2.21 ghz on a Asus a7n8x non deluxe , 1 gig pc 3200 samsung memory, and my radeon 9700 pro

the biggest problem is my motherbord with sound and lan.

what can i do with my serveR? wich linux is good and fast enough for my server?

i still like to download things with ftp and i really like to get a download programma that reconnects and stuff:)

thnx for the info:)

Well,

In reply.

Try using paragraphs, makes it more easy to read.

Regarding your hardware, download Knoppix (live Linux CD, boots from CD). Very good at hardware detection.

Also, stop skipping your English class. :)

Dougie.

Yeah, Knoppix is EASY!

Burn the .iso image to a CD, make sure your PC will boot from a CD, and cycle power.

It will run right off of your CD (and some RAM).

Should you like it and want to make it permanent, you can install it to hour hard drive! ;)

I have problems with mandrake and redhat, though spin-offs are generally VERY good. I've found Slackware to install all my drivers for the same setup you have very well.

I don't use onboard sound though so I dunno how well it works.

I suggest you look into the many distros out there and find one or two to suit your needs.

Knoppix is about the most user friendly distro out there, and you can pretty easily set it up to install on your hard drive (it's really not supposed to but you can force it)

Linux can read from NTFS hard drives but it can't write to them (safely).

MSN doesn't have a client for linux but there are 3rd party options.

I believe there is a WinAMP for Linux but I don't know how good it is.

Knoppix will install onto a hard disk easy enough but find a hard disk that you can format (and thus erase).

For MSN chat capability, there is aMSN and GAIM, among others. aMSN looks most like MSN Messenger, GAIM is more flexible - like Trillian is.

For WinAmp, there are many media players. xmms is the one I use almost exclusively.

Remember, in the Linux world, there are 10 times the number of programs available than you may be used to in Windows. Some are even command line based. (For example there are MP3 players that run from the command prompt - and they do a very good job!)

The latest knoppix is 3.3 although there was an early december and then a later december release with the same number.

What is your onboard LAN chipset? If you can't find drivers and you have a desktop computer then you might consider picking up a <$10 PCI ethernet card with a Realtek chipset just to save time.

neither the onboard 3com or the Nvidia lan adapters work in Knoppix (Even in 3.3) without some configuring (of which i havnt taken the time to do so i cant help you), worked fine in my laptop though...

The nVidia cards actually have some decent vendor support. Better than ATI (from what I have heard).

Knoppix doesn't have a root password.

Just hit enter when it prompts. :)

Onboard LAN should work. I have never (personally) had problems with ANY ethernet port (except WiFi adapters) in Linux. I know that there is hardware out there that does have problems. I just hope that you can get yours working.
