Fred Derf Veteran Posted January 28, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 28, 2004 I have Knoppix installed on the hard disk so it's basically now just Debian. I used an apt-get frontend (Synaptic) to install all of the Gnome modules and dependancies but it does not show on the login menu. I can choose KDE, icewm, windowmanager etc.. but I don't see Gnome on that list. How do I get Gnome as a valid desktop environment choice? According to Synaptic, everything seems to be installed correctly.
MrStaticVoid
You should be able to have a file called /etc/X11/Sessions/Gnome containing something like: #!/bin/sh exec gnome-session but I use the script that comes with Gentoo (it may be the same for other distros). It is a bit complex so I attached it. Gnome

Some of my other environments have their own folders. /etc/X11/icewm /etc/X11/windowmaker /etc/X11/xfce /etc/X11/xfce4 /etc/X11/fluxbox etc... Fred Derf Veteran Posted January 30, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted January 30, 2004 In case anyone other than myself cares, I did fix the problem. Using my Microsoft skills, I rebooted. Uninstalled the packages. Reinstalled the packages and rebooted. For some reason this time it worked. I did the same trick with FreeCiv and that also seemed to fix the problem with the CivServer GUI and the missing icons from the game submenu.
