Quran wa'Sunnah
Does anyone know if there is a way to move the "Documents And Settings" directory (the home directory) to another drive or partition like on Linux? I already installed XP PRO here at work, and never saw an option at installation time to move anything around. Is this possible? Thanks for the help. +primortal Subscriber² Posted February 7, 2002 Subscriber² Share Posted February 7, 2002 I don't think you can move the 'Documents and Settings' directory, but you can change the 'My Documents' directory here is MS Q Article
Nidonocu
You can use TweakUI to readjust most of your folders else where, but XP still needs Doc & Set to be there, even if they are empty and blank I think.:ponder:
Joel
Documents and Settings must stay there as there are also hidden files that are your desktop settings and stuff.
arhra
You can indeed move the documents and settings directory, but you've got to be careful, and it's not an easy process, as it involves replacing all references to "documents and settings" in the registry to be amended to point at the new path. the process is detailed in Q236621. Having recently done this myself (i now have everything on a seperate drive/partition mounted as home :D ), i can definately say that it's not recommended unless you really have to, it's quite tedious, and easy to end up with problems (i had a bit of a scare when i thought i'd managed to delete all my email archives :o ). If you do really want to do it though, i can say that Registry Crawler will make the process almost infinitely easier (it lets you do a global find and replace, rather than going through and changing each entry one-by-one in regedit).
