newbie

Recommended Posts

I have linux 9 set up on a computer and windows XP on two others in my home. all three connect to the internet via router to cable. I have an email account with MSN. I've tried to set up email on the linux 9 box with Mozilla and Ximiam to no avail. Is there a step by step for newbies on this? I have connectivity on all boxes and I know my POP and SMTP hosts. What do I need to do?

Thanks Nikiblack

MSN will NOT allow true POP3 connections, even if you pay for it, it's not a true POP3...though some programs have learned to circumvent this, such as Incredimail, which I think is windows only.

Oh, come on, people...

Let's not give the newbie too tough of a time.... (even if it was a bit funny)

And, to answer the question, you cannot even get any POP mail client in Windows to retreive MSN mail. So, the odds of being able to do this on Linux are next to nothing (unless someone actually wanted to set up a sniffer and see what sort of weird non-standard handshaking was going on with Outlook Express and the MSN Network)

Sorry, but it's one of the things that Microsoft does to try to keep people using only their products...

That is because Hotmail/MSN/Passport addresses use HTTP. If you want a POP3 mail accout pay for it or fine a free one, I'm sure they are around.

You would think that most ISP's provide POP email accounts, atleast 1 ;)

If you do not like the username or domain your ISP can provide you - for like $20-30 a YEAR, you could get your own domain and have whatever address your heart desires. Few different companies come to mind - right off the top, where this can be done for that price range.

I really do fail to understand the wide use of Hotmail and Yahoo type accounts - except for spam traps. They are great for that ;)

You can register you own domain for peanuts a year, then just find a host you like to house the pop mailboxes. If for some reason you are unhappy with the POP account that your ISP provides you - I have NEVER heard of an ISP that does not provide atleast 1 mailbox.

Basically it pretends to be a webbrowser and just uses the HTTP interface to it. So it will be slow.

Also, if Hotmail/MSN change the way the page is laid out, it won't work most likley.

On the other hand....

If Microsoft changes the way that their Hotmail pages are laid out, OE will also fail to work. ;) (so they would probably pump out an OE update at about the same time) :/
