Activision announced the next title in the Call of Duty series to be Black Ops 4 back in March. While a full reveal is yet to happen, according to a report by Polygon, the upcoming shooter could ship without a traditional single-player campaign, a first for the series.
Citing anonymous "sources with knowledge of the project’s status," the report claims the campaign was scrapped due to Treyarch realizing the single-player portion would not be completed by the time it needed to ship the game, and the studio had pivoted to put more attention on expanding the multiplayer and cooperative zombie modes. The inclusion of a battle royale mode is also a possibility.
There are also rumors circulating of a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 remaster that will launch this year, which will only include the popular game's single-player campaign. We may be seeing another Infinite Warfare situation where Black Ops 4 could arrive bundled with the remaster to make up for the missing campaign, but this is all speculation at this point.
When Polygon reached out for comment, Activision simply replied with the usual "We don’t comment on rumor and speculation" line, so we will have to wait until Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's official unveiling on May 17 to see if these claims have any merit.
