well osx isn't linux. and it only runs on ppcs... so thats that one out of the way ;)

what problems are you having with mdk 9.2? 'cause to be honest thats not a bad distro to start on if you don't have much unix experience...

in terms of pure usability, I place Xandros 2.0 high on the list, but its not free

I've been playing with Sun Java Desktop 2003, and it "looks" pretty cool, based of SuSE its hard to go wrong.

Xandros and Libranet are great distros which are very well tuned for good linux use.

I personally like Fedora as it's GNOME based mainly and I love my GNOMEs :)...

Gentoo is my pick.  In my opinion its the best one out there.

Definitely. Once you get a taste of the Ports system, you'll stick with it. With Gentoo you get to learn a bit more about your computer and Linux. It's a pain to set up if you have a slow system (around 16 hours on my comp, 2.4GHz, 1.5GB RAM) but it's also dependant on your internet connection. If you have a fast internet connection then get the Basic CD and start from stage 1. If you have a slow internet connection then get the 2-Disc Install version. In the end you're gonna love Gentoo and Portage. Just print out the install guide from Gentoo and follow the instructions, you can't go wrong.

I've been using Libranet for about 6 weeks, and its a very good distro for both beginners and advanced users. Its not free, but you can get it for about $50 if you say you're a student.

gentoo isnt and easy one your best off learning something nice and easy that installs itself for you, i wanted to run gentoo but the install is all done by your self your best bet is to run something like fedora its redhat but with the name, nice and easy and then work toward gentoo that reminds me go to get round to install MDK what probs did you have with it anyway?

Gentoo actually isn't all that hard. It's just time consuming. Only thing that's somewhat hard is the drivers, if you don't know what to put in your kernel or what to download to make a device work, then it's somewhat difficult, but really it's all scripted so you just have to type a few things.

what about SUSE? how easy/difficult is it? we are starting to learn about unix/linux in uni now and I've spent the last couple of hours getting the files off ftp.

I have heard great things about SUSE's usability. Up there with Mandy and Fedora.

YaST is supposed to be excellent! (I have never used it, though)

i personally like fedora. its a pretty good distro to get started with as it has a lot of utilities to configure things or if your more advanced you can manually configure the files.

i just tried suse but i think i dl'ed the wrong thing

is there a free download thats not live on cd ?

do u have a good iso link for fedora ?

SUSE has a free FTP install. They don't do the .iso thing.

Fedora can be found at fedora.redhat.com

All distros can be found at linuxiso.org ;)

the ftp install wouldnt work with my wireless connection, so I ftp'ed over there and grabbed the files, then put them on a dvd, took bloody ages to download though, i'm glad the ftp install didnt work, otherwise it'd be the longest OS install time I've seen :p

Have you ever done a stage 1 Gentoo installation on a 600mhz comp with a 28.8 kbps connection? It takes at least five days to do and I cannot count the number of times I've done that on both of my hands.
