Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's full unveiling event took place today, and Treyarch had some surprising announcements to make. A couple of the biggest reveals of the event were the absence of a single-player campaign, and the addition of a battle royale mode. Also, the game will arrive to PC gamers exclusively via Blizzard's Battle.net, ditching Steam from the equation for possibly all upcoming games in the series.
Rumors of the game not having a single-player campaign surfaced last month, but with the official confirmation arriving today, Black Ops 4 will be the first game in the series to not ship with one.
The series jumping in on the battle royale train isn't surprising, considering the amount of success that PUBG and Fortnite are seeing. Although we didn't see any gameplay, Treyarch said the mode, titled Blackout, will be played on a single large-scale map and will feature land, air, and sea vehicles.
The usual multiplayer and the cooperative zombie modes also make a return, with the latter bringing three campaigns this time. Players will be traveling across time to various periods to do their undead slaughtering, ranging from ancient Rome to the Titanic.
As for the Battle.net exclusive PC version, Treyarch announced that dedicated servers will be making a return, alongside support for ultrawide monitors, 4K HDR support, and uncapped frame rates.
Carrying all the above, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is slated to launch on October 12 on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
