Safari 1.2 coming soon...

Recommended Posts

Apple has seeded a new version of Mac OS X to developers. Seed 7F24 has been posted with major changes to "Graphics, OpenGL games, USB devices, printing, browsing networks, Cocoa applications".

Of most interest is the inclusion of Safari 1.2 (current released version is 1.1.1).

The newest version of Safari includes a number of significant improvements:

- Ability to "tab" to form elements (buttons, checkboxes, submit buttons)

- The option (on/off) to "tab" to hyperlinks

- Improved download manager with resume

- View dimensions of an image

- Custom cursor support

- Option to open links from applications "in a new tab in the current window"

- Improved performance

More details @ Mac Rumors

Safari 1.2 sounds good, and I can't wait to check out the new Download Manager & Improved performace.

Yeah it does sound like a big update, does anyone remember a rumor that 10.3.5 will contain added features and not just bug fixes, kinda like a stepping stone between 10.3 and 10.4 ?

Sounds good, but I never read anything about it. You sure you were awake at the time? I can't imagine it personally, not major features at least...

This is the best thing EVER! EVER!!! Even better than sliced bread! Seriously, I want to have David Hyatt's lovechild.

Doesn't it already do that?

Anyway, the enhanced download manager sounds nice. Hope it'll allow us to actually choose the download location.

I too was wondering about the new Tab features, does it mean we'll be able to open ALL new links into a tab instead of new windows? like when you click on someones WWW button in there sig :s

dude! the new download manager is awesome. Not only does it allow you to choose a download location, it also lets you pause/resume downloads like said. It creates a .download file which is associated with Safari and can be used to resume a download after you've closed safari/cleared the downloads list. Also, the .download icon reflects the actually progress of the download (shown below) which is quite awesome.

Icon2.jpg

Note the progress bar on the icon is updated in near real-time(updates every 5%-10% or so) to show the progress, even after you close safari. This probably sounds geeky but I think it's pretty cool! Thanks Apple!! :)

Some opinions after using 1.2 They finally have the option to change the smallest viewable font. This is probably my favorite addition.

Clicking links in people's sigs still opens a new window. There is no option to get it to open in a tab aside from ctrl-click. So I don't understand the addition, since clicking links in other apps always loaded into another tab in previous builds. Download resume works nice. It doesn't ask you where to dl the file to though.

Haven't noticed anything different with 10.3.3 yet

Noticed 10.3.3 reset the clock to Cupertino and PST. Did some checking....yeah it allows you to specify download location in the preferences, but not on the download manager, which I was expecting.

Safari is excellent but is it such a big deal to add the ability to save an image by right clicking, without having to open it in a new window? This has been in IE for years and is my biggest gripe with Safari.

Still wouldn't use anything else though, so I suppose Apple needn't bother :p

I really didn't notice one thing different in OSX, but safari is pretty cool with the downloads.

Now I gotta format.
