Finder using 100% cpu?

Recommended Posts

About 10 minutes ago, my CPU Portal widget started showing that 100% of my CPU was being used.

All 100% is being split between 'user' and 'system'. It seems as if the system is sucking up whatever cpu is not being used by any user processes.

Why would this happen suddenly? I restarted finder and cpu usage dropped to 3%, then right back up to 100%. I logged out and back in...same thing. I turned my powerbook off and back on a minute later...same thing.

This is really weird. Then I realized I had no way of checking my currently running processes...to see if something was sucking all the cpu power.

How can I find out what exactly is using all my cpu? Please provide any info that would be useful. Thanks.

BTW: I'm using OSX 10.3.2

ok. i found activity monitor (duh on my part)...but yeah, Finder is using like 93% CPU.

This has NEVER happened before and it just happened all of a sudden. It makes no sense.

Any ideas on what I can do about it?

:ninja: I actually have this happen on a fairly regular basis. I am not sure what causes it, it only happens in 10.3 on my system. The only thing I have found to do is kill the process with Activity Monitor...after that the Finder goes back down to its happy 0% CPU use. I think Apple should be notified of this, but not by me, as it is not my copy of Panther I am using... :ninja:

:ninja: Actually I have windows networking on and I have at least two disks mounted all the time so I can listen to the 16GB of music the house shares on the server, which is a PC. Does this make a difference? Also, I reinstalled Panther the other night and it broke my ability to browse the windows machines on my network from the Finder, nor does my printer sharing to windows clients work anymore. I got this to work ONCE. I dont know what wwas so special about the install the one time. Anyone else with either (or both) of these issues want to help? :ninja:

thanks for the info guys. it actually went away just as suddenly as it appeared. even though i logged off and restarted with finder still taking 100% cpu, i decided to restart finder one more time....and it was back to normal.

weird, but it's over now...

:ninja: I'm glad this is fixed for you...could you watch activity monitor for me and see if it happens again? This is a recurring issue with my system, it happens for me about 2-3 times a day, where I have to kill the Finder task to recover my CPU. It drives me crazy, and being uninitiated to *nix, I can't figure out a way to see what is really causing this. :ninja:
