Microsoft updates OneNote for Windows 10 with many new features

OneNote with the new Office ribbon

Microsoft is rolling out a new update for OneNote on Windows 10 starting today, and it brings along a slew of improvements and new features to the app both for Insiders and general users.

The announcement comes from OneNote Product Manager William Devereux on Twitter and it comes with a fairly extensive changelog. Here's what's new for general users:

  • Now you can pin a "new page" tile to your Start menu, which will open the app and create a new page right away.
  • You can also now pin a transparent tile for OneNote through the Options menu in the app
  • There's now an "Online video" button in the ribbon to make it easier to embed videos in pages
  • Pasting options now allow you to choose the text formatting behavior (Keep source formatting, merge formatting, or just keep the text)

Insiders are also getting a host of improvements today. However, it should be noted that some of the new additions may already have been available to you if you enabled experimental features in the Options menu within the app. Our test devices haven't yet received an update today, yet some of the announced features already seem to be present. Nonetheless, here's the announced changelog:

  • There's now a new option to let you choose whether or not to include the source link when you paste
  • Cut, copy, and paste have been added to the ribbon for easier access
  • Clear formatting will now also clear custom paragraph spacing from wherever you might have copied text
  • Some insiders may see the new Office ribbon announced last month
  • There's now an option to hide the borders of the table, and you can now quickly select a range of cells. And if you frequently sort tables, you can now choose whether or not to include the header row when sorting.
  • A new symbol gallery has been added to the ribbon, including the top 25 symbols
  • Two new eraser sizes are now available for you to choose from
  • Microsoft Translator is now available right inside OneNote in the View tab

That's certainly quite an upgrade, and fans of the app will likely appreciate all the improvements it carries. This is especially welcome as the UWP app is set to supersede the OneNote app in Office 2019. The update is rolling out gradually, so don't fret if it hasn't popped up for you yet.
