markwolfe Veteran Posted January 31, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 31, 2004 Yes. All distros come with generic drivers. Sometimes they are called 'generic', and sometimes they are referred to as 'VESA' or 'VESA-compliant'. They are usually lower res and lower refresh, but they are pretty much standards that all CRT and Video Card manufacturers adhere to for compatibility reasons. markwolfe Veteran Posted January 31, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 31, 2004 so how could i change the drive for mdk 9.2 in the terminal ? I'm still learning, so I use the GUI for many of my selections such as this. However, I do know that there is a setting in the "Video" section (I believe) of the XF86conf (? by memory ?) file in /etc/X11/ You should be able to use vi to edit this. I am at work and on a Win machine, so this is all from memory, but my selection was "nv" for my nVidia card. I just looked at it this morning, so recollection is a bit vague (in typical noob fashion) ;) [EDIT: Is there a reason you can't or don't prefer to use the built-in MDK GUI tools?]
gawdflesh
so how could i change the drive for mdk 9.2 in the terminal ? Download and install the official ATI 9600 XFree86 drivers here. After that, follow the instructions on how to install the driver and set up XFree86 for that driver. It's pretty simple and straightforward, and the installation and configuration are done via the command line.
