The National Museum of Brazil, the country’s oldest scientific institution, has been engulfed by flames after a fire broke out on Sunday night.

The museum, which recently celebrated its 200-year anniversary, contains more than 20 million items in its collection, including artefacts from Egypt and the oldest human fossil ever discovered in Brazil.

In a statement, President Michel Temer described the building’s destruction as an “incalculable loss for Brazil” and “a sad day for all Brazilians”.

According to the BBC, no injuries have been reported as firefighters continue to battle the blaze at the building, which once served as a residence for the Portuguese royal family.

Sad to see things like this. Do they know what started the fire yet?

Not yet, but the museum has been neglected for years with barely enough money to keep it open.

The building was basically falling apart and had zero mechanism to help contain the fire.

The fire hydrants near the museum don't even work and the firefighters had to get water from a lake.

Yeah it seems like that, most of the building looks to have been completely gutted.

We had a listed building near to where I live suffer a similar fate. The issue here wasn't the lack of fire control,  but these old building tend to go up in flames quickly. They managed to save a lot of what the house held like paintings etc, but a lot of original woodwork  and fixtures/fittings were lost.

Some pics I took of the inside.

Brazil spent Olympics $13.1 billion dollars ($11.6 of which was taxpayers' money) on the Olympics; money that should have been spent on infrastructure.

On this we can 100% agree. The Olympics were a boondoggle from day one and the money was better spent elsewhere - including this museum.

I'm sure other museums would have cared for the artifacts until a renovation or new building was completed.
