danbalsh
I can't seem to find a proper answer to this question, I've looked on Apple.com and found nothing and all the other sites seem to have conflicting views on the subject! How do YOU leave your iPod when your not listening to it? do you leave it in the dock to charge? do you leave it in the dock once charged? I want to make sure my battery lasts as long as possible, so any suggestions would be super
Max Veteran Posted February 1, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 1, 2004 I haven't got an iPod, but the best thing to do with all batteries is to fully discharge it, fully recharge, fully discharge, fully recharge, etc.
Don
I read that it is best to never let the battery fully discharge, I read that here: IPod Lounge
Steve
I leave it sat like this, unless i am using it.
nummi
I leave it sat like this, unless i am using it. NOOOO!!! Don't leave it mounted on your desktop! The hard drive will keep spinning while mounted, and shorten the life of your iPod.

Does it really? :o Thats me buggered then, i've done it since April! :p But will the disc really spin, when i'm not actually interacting with it? I can't see why it would, its always mounted, but I rarely use it.

Q: Is it okay to leave the iPod in the dock, or otherwise attached to external power, for extended periods of time? A1: Yes. The iPod's circuitry will no longer charge the battery once it is determined to be full, even if the iPod is still attached to external power. So no battery problems there, just the hard drive. Steve
I've just read this.So no battery problems there, just the hard drive. OK, thanks for the heads up. The Hard Disc is will still probably outlast the 'supposed' life of the battery, so I think I am safe. But just to be safe, i'll turn off FireWire Disc access.... Cheers
Chadwick
I read in the manual its safe to recharge it at any point and you dont have to let it drain. When i first got it i played all the games on it until i got home fromt he apple store :p so it was dead when i got home, let it fully recharge, than started putting songs on it. Now i only connect it to my pc to add more songs and i leave it in the dock at night, which is hooked up to 2 speakers by my bed, so it acts as my stereo :p
Fusion
I leave it in the dock when I am not using it but I do dismount it. I believe Apple has said that is what you are supposed to do. ??
Tim Dorr Veteran Posted February 1, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 1, 2004 http://ipodbatteryfaq.com/ Lithium ion batteries are good for 300-500 charge/discharge cycles. A "charge/discharge" cycle generally consists of an extended charging period, and an extended discharging period. A quick charge, listening for 30 minutes, and charging again, for example, does not constitute a full "charge/discharge cycle", but could rather be considered a portion of one. Also, many, many factors affect how much you get out of each charge, as well as how long the battery will last overall. The main factors include charging patterns, the routine amount of discharge (i.e., Do you use it until it dies? Use it for an hour or two and recharge?), temperature, storage, usage frequency, etc. Lithium ion batteries do not take kindly to frequent full or complete discharges. When possible, the optimal usage pattern - for any lithium ion battery - is a partial discharge, followed by recharging. A partial discharge can be anything less than a full discharge. However, an occasional full discharge is desirable (e.g., once every 30 charges) to calibrate the battery. Lithium ion batteries do not significantly degrade, or develop "memory", even if charged at irregular intervals; irregular charging is acceptable. An iPod can also safely be attached to external power for extended periods of time. (For extremely extended periods of time, such as months, the battery will essentially be the same as if it were in "storage"; lithium ion batteries do not store well for extended periods of time at full charge. However, there is no way around this under these circumstances.) When possible, always use the AC adapter (or vehicle adapter) for extended charging, not a FireWire cable attached to a computer. If you will be storing your iPod for an extended period of time (i.e., weeks to months), it is recommended to store the unit in a cool place at about 40% charge. The most harmful combination for storage is full charge at high temperature (i.e., in a hot car for a couple of weeks). http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61434 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61385

Hardly ever turn off my Mac but this was an unexpected side-effect for those times that I do.
Redestium
I only did a complete drain and recharge about 3 times when I first got mine to calibrate it. Now I leave it on my desk not in the dock just because. :p
