Facebook announced in February this year a new initiative meant to provide funding to individuals building communities on the platform. Since then, the social media giant received more than 6,000 applications from across the world.
Out of thousands of people wanting to join, Facebook announced today that it has picked 115 individuals who will serve as community leaders in residence, fellows, and youth participants.
Out of the 115 participants, Facebook granted the role of community leaders in residence to five people who will each receive up to $1,000,000 in funding to build communities. The company said it will decide on the final amount based on a budget proposal from the residents themselves.
Recipients of the funding include Adhunika Prakash, who created an 80,000-strong community in India offering and receiving support for its breastfeeding effort. The other community leaders in residence are Christian Delachet, co-founder of the Wanted Community; Latasha Morrison, an advocate of racial reconciliation in the U.S.; Noah Nasiali, who built a community of 100,000 farmers in Africa; and Paula Pfeifer, who created a community of deaf people in Brazil.
More than 100 fellows and youth participants will also be awarded up to $50,000 each for their various community efforts. The community leaders were culled by a selection committee comprised of Facebook employees and external community experts.
