Firewire HD as iPod?

Recommended Posts

Would it be possible to make iTunes think that a firewire HD is an iPod?

My music collection is growing, and it would be nice to have iTunes auto backup all my new files rather then me manually doing it with the finder and either replacing everything or finding changed files.

I'm 90% sure it doesn't work that way.

Have you tried 'dd'ing your ipod to the firewire drive and then connecting it (the fw hdd) to your mac? This sounds like a perfect job for rsync actually.

i think hes trying to say he doesnt have an ipod but wants iTunes to autobackup his music on a firewire device. Correct me if im wrong but i dont think it will recognize anything as an iPod except an iPod but there might be other ways to accomplish your goal

iPods report themselves as standard FireWire storage devices. I suspect that duplicating the directory structure may be enough to make itunes think it's dealing with an iPod (though I'm not certain). There is the possibility that iTunes does something further with the iPod firmware - but I can't find info one way or the other.

so, if he's got access to an iPod he can clone the ipod's hard disk to his firewire drive, shove it in, and see what happens.

Ya if there was a utility out there to clone hard drive, I don't see why this wouldn't work. However, I know on windows, when you plug in an iPod, even thought windows recognizes it as a firewire HD right away, you still have to install the software for iTunes to recognize it as an iPod. There might be something there. But it still seems like cloning the Hard Drive would work fine. I'd be interested to see how this turns out. If it does not, you could always just use a backup program to back up the files themselves to the FW HD.
