Is content actually being cut off?

You're not talking about the the black bars that happen with letterboxing are you? Something like the below

It's not broken, it's just how the content is delivered :P

Most TVs have the option to zoom or crop the image, but it's likely in that scenario you'll lose some content.

What if it worked correctly for years until the other day?

If that's the case I'd be surprised if it was something with Verizon. Have you tried playing around with the settings on your TV?

your internet connection provider would have nothing to do with how a video renders

letter-boxing is normal on widescreen videos. even on DVDs

if specific videos weren't rendering that way before then it's either the content provider or your TV where settings have changed.

I would reply that it was actually working incorrectly and now it is working correctly. The black bars are there so you can view the content in its native aspect ratio. Anything else means you are getting a cut off image.

So I would suggest getting used to them. Eventually you will not even realize they are there.

Of course it is up to you ultimately, but realize if you eliminate the black bars by utilizing a zoom, you will be cutting off some of the image.

So you broke it again and are now ruining the picture, as advised by others you should be watching things in native not zoomed  but each to their own i guess?

Fios also provides IPTV, there are some settings on their receivers that can do what the OP suggested, but it appears to have been a TV issue.

Well, it's all about preference. When I watch older content that is or was originally SD, I usually zoom in to eliminate the black bars on the side and simulate a modern widescreen view. You'd be amazed how infrequently I miss that little bit of image at the top and bottom. I  have no problem with letterbox, but for some reason the bars on the sides annoy me. Pillarboxing just bugs me.
