aberflasm
Not too sure what you can do other than try system restore. Did you make a backup before you started messing with the files? I'm no techie yet, so i'm not sure what to tell you. hope some one can. I would try system restore if you haven't already. good luck.

aberflasm
im not sure if we understand eachother. what i was refering to was system restore from the systems properties box which pops up when you click system under control panel in your start menu. it doesn't record onto disk such as floppy or compact, rather on the hard drive i believe. if you have it enabled then you should be able to click on it and restore your system. But as i said before, im not a tech yet.

It comes up with the same error "Windows could not find the UxTheme.dll please try re-installing it" now how can i re-install it if i cant into windows?. Is there ANY way i can get my system back to normal?
Dazzla Veteran Posted February 9, 2002 Veteran Share Posted February 9, 2002 If it cant find it, can you not just put the dll (hacked or original, up to you) on the c: drive (or whatever your system partition is) and in safe mode with command prompt type: copy uxtheme.dll c:windowssystem32 If it asks to overwrite, then it sounds like your system is pretty messed cause its not recognising its there. If it copies there without making a fuss, restart and see if it has worked. I hope this helps. if you cant get into windows, put in the XP cd, go to it in the command prompt, In this picture I've extracted uxtheme.dll from the cd to the c: drive. Hopefully you'll be able to get it from this picture:

Dazzla Veteran Posted February 9, 2002 Veteran Share Posted February 9, 2002 yeah that sounds like the best advice to me, It will recognise your file is missing or damaged and relace it with the original.
Troop101
What am i doing wrong? i typed in the command and it said "Bad Command or Filename". You said "load the xp dos" what does that mean. i put in my win98 boot disk and when it showed up i pressed Shift+f5 to go into command prompt. Is that what i am supposed to do? Thanks for the help. Dazzla Veteran Posted February 9, 2002 Veteran Share Posted February 9, 2002 Ok, can you boot into safe mode with command prompt? If yeah then do that, then at the command prompt type: sfc /scannow have your XP CD in the drive, it will scan your system files and any that are damaged or have been modified will be replaced from off the CD. Troop101
I can get into Safe Mode with command prompt. I typed in the sfc /Scannow and it come up saying "Windows File protectioncould not initiate a scan of the protected system file. The specific Error is 0x000006baThe RPC server is unavailable]" :s Does anyone know what that means?
skitz.com
If your still having problems in safe mode reboot as normal that should leave you in a position without Explorer. But you will still have control over what tasks you can run. Just load Task Manager and use that to run Internet Explorer. Then use the File > Open function of IExplore from the toolbar to browse to the Windows Directory, making sure that Files of Type is set to all files. Then without actually opening, in the browse function, rename the errand uxtheme.dll back to what it was originaly. Dont forget to do all those that you renamed in the first place. Close Internet Explorer and log back into your account and everything should be fine.

Dazzla Veteran Posted February 9, 2002 Veteran Share Posted February 9, 2002 at the command prompt type: services.msc look for "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)", make sure its set to automatic and started. While you are there, select "Themes" and set it to disabled. Another option is to boot from the XP CD or the official boot floppies, then start a recovery console. You should see the option, it's something like "press R". Then in recovery console type: sfc /scannow If that doesn't work, try a repair installation, it keeps all of your settings and installed programs as well. skitz.com
Thats correct, Though you should still be able to run TaskManager (Ctrl-Alt-Del >TaskManager). Then in Applications Tab hit New task. then open C:Program filesInternet ExplorerIExplore.exe

Tim Dorr Veteran Posted February 9, 2002 Veteran Share Posted February 9, 2002 Well, i was reading the instructions and I may see where the problem is in them. There's this line: Copy uxtheme.pat to uxtheme.dll. Which in DOS lingo would be: <pre>copy c:windowssystem32uxtheme.pat c:windowssystem32uxtheme.dll</pre> Which keeps a copy of the uxtheme.pat file availible to check. They mention that the date and time of the two files should be the same, this is to make sure that Windows File Protection hasn't kicked in and changed things in the background. So, if you want to try again, and that was your error, that's how to do things correctly (You may also want to try doing things in safe mode to be more sure)
Crash5
I had the same problem and nothing helped except doing a repair from windows xp cd.
