BTallack
Is the powebook still working? Or does it freeze on boot-up?
grimreaper
yea everything's working fine but just not sure why the face and question mark showed up and dunno what they mean. any ideas?
orestes
The smiley face and blinking question mark at boot typically meant in older OS's that it was having trouble looking for a system file required for the bootup. Sometimes the OS would actually hang there and you had to put a system disk in when you booted. Nice though that you pay a couple grand for a laptop and it has boot issues right out of the box...Go Apple!!

Tim Dorr Veteran Posted February 2, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 2, 2004 That's the OpenFirmware looking for a boot drive. I used to get it when I booted off my iPod and didn't switch it back when booting to Jaguar. It would look for the iPod first, then go to the secondary source which was the iBook HDD. Just make sure you've got the right boot drive set under System Preferences.

I don't see anywhere in his post that he stated that this happened right out of the box.

aristotle-dude
Yeah, I had that happen on my eMac when I had booted a panther pre-release off my iPod, removed the iPod and rebooted into Jaguar off the main drive. Changing the boot disk setting fixes it has road warrior said. @orestes: If you don't have anything constructive to say, don't say anything. :D
