PNWDweller
I made a very significant upgrade for myself a couple of weeks ago. I moved from a dual core AMD 2 something ghz - (I don't remember now) to an i7 desktop. It's an older one I know and it's in a Dell Optiplex 990, the price was right and I personally don't mind not building my system. CPU: Topology: Quad Core model: Intel Core i7-2600S bits: 64 type: MT MCP L2 cache: 8192 KiB Speed: 3624 MHz min/max: 1600/3800 MHz Core speeds (MHz): 1: 3624 2: 3300 3: 3570 4: 3130 5: 3514 6: 2692 7: 2562 8: 2710 I know this is a Quad Core CPU And has 8 threads per what intel says. I've noticed most of my apps in Ubuntu that report stats show it as an 8-core chip. The above 'inxi' capture also shows this. Am I correct in thinking that the threads are essentially two per core so it thinks it is 8 cores?

Yes, it is a 4 core with HT ... so it will show information for "8 cores" (or really 8 logical processors). Yeah, I wish it wasn't shown the way it is with 8 cores since in reality it is 4 cores with some "pretend ghost cores" allowing a small throughput efficiency boost depending on a lot of factors but realistically around 5% Windows should assign a different color or something to each thread. Pollutes the screen displays and pollutes the mental attention space of everyone who has had to do a momentary double-take when they see all the extra pseudo-cores. So if you had a 16 core CPU, you would see 32 freakin cores!
