Unable to run chkdsk

Recommended Posts

There appears to be some sort of error with my security files but whenever chkdsk gets to that section of the hd it gives me a bluescreen with a message that xp has been stopped to prevent a fatal flaw.

Does anybody know how to fix this?

Ok are you running CHKDSK the correct way?

First, Boot to the WinXP cdrom. From the install list select REPAIR. It should then ask which Disk you are troubleshooting, should be "1". Then it will ask for ADMINISTRATOR password, type it and hit enter or if you don't have a password, just hit enter. You should then be at a C:Windows prompt. Type "CHKDSK /R" without the quotes to run check disk with the repair switch. It should run, get to a certain percent and then may go back to a lower percent, that is normal if there are any File corruption or Allocation Table errors. If it errors out again with a STOP message then your Harddrive may have a Bad Block. Which may require replacing the drive. Unfortunately in the old days, Bad Blocks on Harddrives could be fixed with a low level format, but not on newer drives of today.
