Krook
I've just received my 20 cinema display but the fonts are very un-smooth(dont know the real word for it) comparing to my CRT monitor. Ive changed the font smoothing style and its on optimal resolution+million colors. Whats wrong?

Koyder
From what I've experienced, new font smoothing settings may require a reboot to take effect. But that's just a guess.
Krook
Yeah I tried that too Koyder - but thanks

Fusion
Link to screenshot - don know if its visible or not :( http://members.lycos.co.uk/thekrook/picture1.jpg They look smooth to me. You might be dealing with a case of mismatched resolutions. Make sure your screen resolution is the exact same resolution as your display's native resolution. Other than that, the screenshot looks pretty much exactly like my laptop's lcd display. Note, if you are comparing it to a Windows machine, ClearType and Apple's font smoothing technology are quite different so they will look very different. Koyder
Yeah, the fonts are a little thinner than on my system (using the Medium - best for flat pannel setting). I attach a screenshot of the menubar--open it in one Safari tab and your screenshot in another one and compare.
dougkinzinger
Your fonts are smooth, mate....could it be another problem?
Krook
The res is 1680x1050 - optimal for 20 inch cinema. I see a huge difference from my the CRT i used with my G5.
frod
perhaps you are confusing smooth with blurry? but you must also remember that lcds have physically distinguished pixels. crts just project light from tubes. so i guess it should be slightly less smooth due to this reason. they look pretty damn smooth to me
Krook
OK - something else is wrong. I just hooked back my CRT and looked at the screens i gave you. And as you say they look fine - just like they should. Sorry bout that, but then what the .... is the problem then?
NeoMayhem
From what I've experienced, new font smoothing settings may require a reboot to take effect. But that's just a guess. You just need to reload any apps that were open to see the changes in them.

Ok, so if you hooked up your CRT and the images that you posted look smooth, but they look totally different on your LCD, there is something seriously wrong. I would suggest you try someone else's Apple display like at a store or something, just to make sure that it is just not the different between lcd and crt that you are experiencing. Other than that, your software is getting the right signal, so it is a hardware issue with your monitor and NOT a software problem.
Krook
I think you're right Fusion. The LCD is probably screwed. After using the CRT and then going back to the LCD I can see everything is jagged - widgets, window corners and the round icons in the dock.
