ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. - A man trying to evade authorities headed to a field and then got into a canoe, trying to paddle away from deputies before surrendering Wednesday, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said.

According to an arrest report, Mark Mastromarino asked to test-drive a white Ford Mustang that was for sale in a person's yard, but failed to return the car. The situation started when deputies spotted a vehicle that had been reported stolen near Kindred Spirit Lane, investigators said.

Deputies said they spotted the vehicle and that's when Mastromarino took off, the Sheriff's Office said.

A short time later, according to the arrest report, he then drove the Mustang into a couple of patrol cars and crashed through a fence containing two horses.

The man then ran away and boarded a canoe on the edge of a nearby pond, deputies said.

Deputies spent the next few minutes telling Mastromarino that the pond was surrounded and that a vessel was on its way to remove him from the water, the Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies said he then gave up, paddled ashore and was arrested.

Mastromarino, 45, of St. Johns County, is charged with reckless driving causing damage, assault, property damage, grand theft and possession of marijuana.
