Slack, the popular workspace communication and collaboration app recently jumped on to the dark mode bandwagon and let users of its beta channel test a new dark mode on iOS and Android. Though it's not quite like what was implemented in apps from other instant messaging providers in that it doesn't quite apply to every aspect of the app, the long-awaited feature was a welcome addition for those that prefer the said mode.
Today, less than a week after rolling out dark mode to its beta users on iOS and Android, the company is rolling out an update to the stable version of the app on those platforms that brings with it the much-loved mode. The update is gradually rolling out to devices and enables a toggle in the settings to switch dark mode on.
However, the mode applies only to the chat and settings screens. The sidebar retains the color of your set theme. The background color, too, is a tinge of dark grey, as opposed to the OLED/AMOLED friendly pitch black that is seen in certain apps. There also isn’t a way to automatically enable the mode based on your schedule, such as retaining the light shade in the day and automatically switching to a dark mode in the night.
Since the rollout is staggered, the update might not make its way to every device right away. If you haven’t received the update yet, the wait shouldn’t be a long one. While the iOS and Android versions are receiving this update, the company confirmed that the mode is currently not available on the desktop versions yet. The company did admit that it is working on a dark mode for desktop but did not provide any release timelines.
