Oculus apologizes for hiding Easter eggs in Touch VR controllers

Tech companies occasionally hide Easter eggs in their products, sometimes in order to make pop culture references, and at other times as a nod to fans. Earlier this year, Tesla snuck in a Back to the Future mode in its app, and in 2017, Nintendo thanked its fans in a message hidden in the Switch Pro Controller.

This time, however, it's Oculus which is in the spotlight for "accidentally" hiding some rather creepy (or funny messages, depending upon how you look at it) phrases in its Touch VR controllers.

As Oculus co-founder Nate Mitchell pointed out on Twitter, a variety of phrases were found in the dev kit for the upcoming Rift S and Quest. These Easter eggs included messages like:

  • Big Brother is Watching
  • This Space For Rent
  • The Masons Were Here
  • Hi iFixit! We See You!

The executive explained that these Easter eggs were intended for prototypes, but accidentally made it to the "internal hardware for tens of thousands of Touch controllers". Mitchell noted that the security and integrity of the dev kit was not affected by these phrases, and that the company has fixed its construction and validation process to ensure that such a thing does not happen again.

What's your opinion on tech companies hiding Easter eggs in its hardware or software?
