Chode
Found this here. It is a translation of a chat held with the developers of S.T.A.L.K.E.R and a french website, held on the 2/2/2004. I'll quote a couple of the interesting questions, and if you want more you can follow the above link. Yeah, I know some of the grammar sucks...remember that this was Ukranian guys talking in French to french guys, which got translated into english  <Question> What do you think of the leak of beta and piracy in general? <[GSC]TEAM> We'd rather talk on hunger in Africa, rather than piracy It's hard to oppose piracy, and we've grown with it. We saw the leaked stalker code sold in the street, was rather painful to see... <Question> Can you tell us of a few symptoms of radiaton sickness that the player will experience if he gets too exposed? <[GSC]TEAM> Post-process effects. From time to time player will experience fatigue (visual effects). To cure radiation sickness you'll need to take antirad pills or sip vodka. Sleeping can also help to cure it a bit. <Question> From where comes the name of STALKER? <[GSC]TEAM> The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. name is an abbreviation to be deciphered in the game. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is an acronym <Question> When playing the game in multiplayer cooperative mode, will it be possible to save the game? if yes, will the world status be saved, or just the players status? <[GSC]TEAM> As for cooperative, we are not sure whether we can implement that mode in the game. <Question> When we see final realise S.T.L.K.E.R.? <[GSC]TEAM> The release is planned for Q2 2004, expectedly summer. <Question> Will there be many differents endings depending on our in game action? <[GSC]Team> We are planning over 8 different endings. It will depend on your style of the game and the volume of information you manage to collect. <Question> We can see on screenshots huge buildings. Will it be possible to enter in every buildings? <[GSC]Team> It will be possible to enter every building if it is not destroyed or blocked. <Question> Will the player have some kind of character sheet with stuff like vitals, radiation contamination level, skills, statistics? <[GSC]TEAM> We will have four characteristics for the player to keep track of his character's condition. That includes health, hunger, fatigue and radiation. <Question> Does the weather have an influence on the gameplay? <[GSC]Team> Yes it will. In the night the characters will see worse, and the player grows tired faster in the rain. <Question> Last year, you told us you were still wondering whether or not including some girls in the game. Did you made up your mind? <[GSC]TEAM> We are still voting within the team, part demands girls in, part is against We'll see. <Question> We can drive car or other transport in game? <[GSC]Team> Yes, you will be able to drive transport ranging from passenger cars to heavy trucks (Kamaz). <Question> Aren't you afraid of over doing the game developpment? Do you think you will be able to implement all those features in the game? <[GSC]TEAM> No development fear here whatsoever, we haven't skipped virtually anything from the initial feature list. And so far all goes as planned and fine. <Question> Will the game be sold with developpement means of Mods? <[GSC]TEAM> MODs - we think hard on it as we understand the importance of mod-community. <Question> Is the engine considered finished? Are you only focusing on the gameplay stuff and optimizing now? <[GSC]TEAM> The DX8 part of the engine is complete, now working on DX9 one. Gameplay is done by another people, so both tasks progress simultaneously. <Question> Speaking about creatures eating cadavers, I wonder if there is some decomposition of them? <[GSC]TEAM> Bodies will decompose. But monsters will prefer fresh corpses. <Question> What are you sources of inspiration? <[GSC]TEAM> Chernobyl, Fallout, Stalker movie and Roadside Picnic book were all the inspirations behind the game. <Question> Will you keep voice acting in russian subtitled in english or will it be localised as well? <[GSC]Team> The voice will be localised. <Question> We read in your devdiaries that you have an enourmous attention to details. Is the game feature-complete now, or are you still adding stuff? <[GSC]TEAM> Work on game features is in full-swing now, so you'll see more of eye-candy later <Question> What do you think about the Beta, wich was released on internet? Did have an impact in the rest of developement? <[GSC]Team> The leaked version was only very old prealpha and it will not affect the rest of the development. <Question> THQ recently changed the name of the game to S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: The Shadow of Chernobyl on its press website. Can we expect some "official" name change announce soon? <[GSC]TEAM> Name change is possible. <Question> Will this game be compatible with the 5.1 sound? <[GSC]Team> Yes, the game will be compatible with 5.1 sound. <Question> Will weapons deal realistic damage? How do you manage injuries? <[GSC]TEAM> Weapons will deal realistic damage, we'll have different levels of injuries, open wounds causing loss of blood and blood stains on the ground. <Question> A while ago you released some screens optimized for GeForceFX cards, but not in the last months: are such optimization still planned? <[GSC]TEAM> The DX9 optimization is still planned, will be demonstrated later. <Question> Do the engine need petrol? <[GSC]Team> All engines in the game will need patrol. <Question> Can we expect to see car and things like that in multiplayer part? <[GSC]Team> Cars and things like that will be availeble in MP. <Question> Are the pixel and vertex shaders 2.0 included in the DirectX 9 render of STALKER? <[GSC]Team> 2.0 shaders will be in the 9x render. <Question> Do you work on console version? <[GSC]TEAM> No console version so far, we want to complete the PC one first <Question> Is Co-op multiplayer still beung included the multiplayer options in Stalker as its the most eagerly anticipated multiplayer mode desired by the community? <[GSC]TEAM> Cooperative is in question, there are certain difficulties. <Question> Will the game include nuclear weapons? <[GSC]Team> The game will not include nuclear weapons. <Question> How will performance be like on ATI, NV and XGI graphics cards? <[GSC]TEAM> Performance optimization will be done for all the major boards, makes no sense to support only one particular graphics card, user must not suffer! <Question> Will we be able to lift some objects? Hold them in (both) hands? Or the only thing will be moving them by bumping into it? <[GSC]Team> Neary all phisical objects can be moved and pulled (furniture, bodies...). <Question> What is the funniest thing we could find in the game? <[GSC]Team> Death So to sum it up, all of the beautiful screenshots we have seen so far are only DirectX 8 shots, co-op may not be included, and they're not going to be lame like VALVE and actually make this game for all graphics hardware manufacturers (not individual target cards). Oh yeah, and this will be coming out Q2 this year ( :D :D :D :D )

BananaMan
Thanks for this Chode - very interesting. Although I gotta say whoever did the interview asked some pretty stupid questions (eg. voice localization, after hearing about DX9 side of the engine being worked on asking whether the game will use pixel/vertex shaders 2.0, etc.) This really looks to be strong enough to take HL2 (IF it's released) off it's throne for the game of year 2004. Chode
Although I gotta say whoever did the interview asked some pretty stupid questions (eg. voice localization) The voice localisation has been a big question around the forums for the game for a while now. Some people (I have to say me included) were hoping that all in game dialogue would remain in native russian with english subtitles... the major fear is that they'll get some hammy American voice actors who overact... there exists the possibility now that we will have bad voice acting like Resident Evil I, or bad translations like "All Your Base Are Belong To Us" Oh well....I'm sure someone will attempt to convert the english dialogue back to russian and leave the subtitles as English.... Chode
The impression I got was that they would have both russian and english available, for each locale. Hence the name, localization. I thought localisation meant local language, e.g. a german version in germany, a russian version in Russia, an English version in England/America/Australia, etc

They'll have Russian voice acting for the Russian versoin of the game, so what's the problem?

Many people wanted instead all versions released worldwide to have russian voice acting, but localised subtitles...so here in Australia it would sound Russian but I read what is been said in subtitles. May sound lame to many, but I reckon it would add to the atmosphere of the whole zone.... that and it would have been a great help to those trying to learn Russian (aka, me)

I understand what you're saying, I was initially a little confused (thought you lived in Russia!). Personally, I would prefer English voice acting - unless it's really sub-par, but for yourself, I'm sure you'd be able to get your hands on the russian version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. by importing it or downloading the Russian ISO of the game when it's released (after purchasing the game), and just using the CD-KEY on the Russian version. EDIT: Actually, on second thought, I would prefer Russian voices with English subtitles. You're right, it would really add to the atmosphere - as that's what makes S.T.A.L.K.E.R. so interesting in the first place (at least for me). Mm, well, maybe if there's enough demand for it, they'll bundle the russian voice pack along with the localized version. The problem with using a russian copy of the game is that subtitles would most likely be Russian as well....and I can't read cyrillic realtime (about 20 seconds for a 5 word sentence :( ) Here's hoping for the russian voice pack ps, I'm actually Australian ;)
qoa
I sure hope the coop mode makes it, there aren't enough games that have it. A friend and I are drooling at the thought of playing through it.
