Hands on with the macOS 10.15 Catalina developer preview

Earlier this week at its WWDC 2019 keynote, Apple announced macOS 10.15 Catalina. The big news is that it finally removes iTunes, software that has become bloated over the years.

iTunes is replaced by three apps: Music, Podcasts, and Apple TV. If you want to sync your iPhone with your Mac (or flash the iOS 13 beta), you can do that via Finder. Sadly, nothing is changing with iTunes on Windows.

That's the big news, but there are other features that are similar to what was announced for iOS. For example, there's a new Reminders app, which is the same across all platforms. The new Photos experience that's in iOS 13 shows up in macOS, including yearly and monthly views.

There's also a new feature called Sidecar, which lets you use an iPad as a second screen. You can even use the Apple Pencil with it. It's the closest thing to a touchscreen Mac that we've seen.

Following the keynote, Apple released the first developer beta for macOS 10.15 Catalina. We went hands on. Check it out.
