Google Voice question

Question

+jnelsoninjax    11,848

I have Google Voice running through an Obihai OBi200 and I want to change the way outgoing caller ID is displayed, right now when I call out on it, it shows up as jnelsoninax (my Google name) is there anyway to change it so that it shows something besides that?

I think you need to change that with Google... Not the device, but your account.

I just looked and saw no option for that.

how do i change the caller id name, on a google phone number

-----

Google neither provides updates to the CNAM directory databases (also known as CallerID), nor buys that information for GV users' use

This process is not handled as one might expect in that the name is not passed on outbound calls. Instead, records (names) associated with telephone numbers are stored in a database. When a call is received from that number, a lookup is done to this database by the phone company of the person receiving the call.

Displaying CNAM is the responsibility of the receiving phone company. For example,  if you call a Verizon number, it is Verizon’s responsibility to display the correct information. It is common practice among phone companies to cache CNAM information. This means you may have differing results calling different destinations.

The only way to correct a record you believe is incorrect is to open a ticket with the phone company receiving the call.

Can I change what the caller ID says when calling someone?

---

Well, we do know how Google Voice operates with the telephone network, and we can tell you with one hundred percent certainty that Google does not supply its users' names to the national caller ID (CNAM) database, known as the LIDB.

When telephone calls are placed from one telephone carrier to another, the called party's carrier can easily display the calling party's telephone number because it is sent as part of the call routing data.  However, the calling party's name is not sent with that data.  Instead, the called party's carrier has to look it up in the LIDB in real time, and then display it on their customer's phone.  This is not unique; it is how the caller ID system works for all carriers.  Since Google does not feed its user's names and numbers to the LIDB, there is no data available for the called party's carrier to use.

If your caller(s) see some sort of name on their caller ID display when you call them, that information is being matched locally, via the address book/contact list on their telephone.

---

So no doesn't look like you can change that without you somehow getting the CNAM database updated, which google doesn't seem to support doing for you.

Thanks @BudMan I just assumed that there might have been a way, but for a free service, I'm not going to complain!
