Qualcomm unveils the upgraded Snapdragon 855 Plus for gaming, XR, AI and 5G

Qualcomm announced today its Snapdragon 855 Plus mobile platform with a few improvements meant to address the taxing requirements in gaming, artificial intelligence, cross reality (XR), and 5G. The Snapdragon 855 Plus builds upon its original mobile platform announced late last year, while also adding some extra boost to its performance.

The most notable upgrades are in the clock speed. The new mobile platform's Kryo 485 CPU now runs at up to 2.96GHz, quite a leap from the original version's 2.84GHz. Qualcomm also claims the Snapdragon 855 Plus' Adreno 640 GPU can deliver a 15% increase in speed.

Kedar Kondap, Qualcomm's Vice President for Product Management, said:

“Snapdragon 855 Plus will raise the bar for elite gamers with the increase in CPU and GPU performance and elevate experiences for 5G, gaming, AI and XR, which is something our OEM customers look to us to deliver. Snapdragon 855 Plus is our most advanced mobile platform to date and will build upon the success of the 2019 Android flagship Snapdragon 855 5G mobile platform.”

Of course, the refreshed mobile platform still relies on Qualcomm's X50 5G modem and RF Front-end services to support 5G connectivity. That is because the Snapdragon 855 Plus is integrated only with a Snapdragon X24 LTE 4G modem.

Qualcomm expects the Snapdragon 855 Plus to arrive on commercial devices in the second half of this year. There's no word, though, on which vendors will adopt the new mobile platform.
