It was only a few months ago that we heard about a collaboration between Sonos and IKEA to create a new speaker range under the SYMFONISK banner, with both models in the lineup featuring Wi-Fi connectivity and one unit coming in the form of a table lamp. However, Sonos has consistently refrained from including Bluetooth support in its products and even poked fun at the drawbacks of this interface in a commercial from 2016.
According to an FCC filing, change may be in the wind, with Sonos registering a wireless speaker with a modem number of "S17" that operates on both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth according to the operating frequencies table and a slew of test reports. That said, the unit will not be limited to wireless connectivity, as it will also feature Ethernet and USB Type-C ports. Furthermore, according to coverage by The Verge, the filing for this model described it as:
"... a high-performance wireless speaker and part of the Sonos sound system. The device’s primary function will be for streaming with Wi-Fi, but also features Bluetooth audio streaming and Bluetooth Low Energy, used for simplified setup."
Of course, it remains to be seen as to when Sonos's first Bluetooth-enabled speaker will hit the market but details could be revealed at a media event slated to take place in the last week of this month.
