HMD launches the Nokia 3 V, its first postpaid phone on Verizon

HMD Global's Nokia phones haven't exactly made a big splash in the United States, with only a few of them making their way to that market, and more often than not only through unlocked variants and without carrier deals. Only a handful of phones have been available through U.S. carriers, such as the Nokia 2 V on Verizon, but even then, they've only been available as prepaid options, so you couldn't get them on a contract.

Now, that seems to be changing, as HMD has announced the Nokia 3 V, its lastest phone to be released on Verizon, and the first one to be available as a postpaid purchase. The Nokia 3 V is largely based on the Nokia 3.2, announced at MWC 2019, and still clearly closer to the lower end of its smartphone range, but it does offer significant improvements over the 2 V.

It's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 429, backed by 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. It has a large 6.26-inch HD+ (1520x720) resolution in the 19:9 aspect ratio, and a 4,000mAh battery. The rear camera is a single 13MP shooter, while a 5MP front-facing camera will be handling selfies. The phone notably has a Google Assistant button and the power button doubles as a notification light. It also features biometric face unlock, though there are no fancy sensors here, so it won't be terribly secure.

As for software, the phone runs Android Pie out of the box, and HMD Global promises one year and a half of security updates, plus two guaranteed OS upgrades.

The phone will be available from select Verizon stores and on Verizon's website starting on August 23. It'll cost $7 per month on a 24-month contract, or $168 if you want to pay upfront.
