Power BI gets change to summarized data export behaviour

Last week, Microsoft published a recap of updates made to Power BI in July. Later, the tech giant unveiled five new capacity-related settings for the data analytics service, and also detailed this month's changes for the Desktop version.

A preview for shared datasets with the Build permission was also rolled out around the same time. This new type enables users to to build content on a dataset internally, such as in the form of reports and dashboards, or even outside Power BI, such as through Excel sheets and exportation of underlying data. Notably, however, the introduction of this permission type meant that users with only Read permission were unable to export summarized data, despite being able to access such data from a visual through the 'See Data' feature.

Now, based on user feedback, this permission requirement is being removed. As such, users without Build permission can export summarized data to external services, though they'll still be unable to create content connected to the underlying data. In essence, customers with read access only will not be able to export more data than is being showed to them in reports.

Power BI admins and report authors are offered further controls over which users have export access, with existing mechanisms allowing for locking down of all data export experiences. The latest change will be rolled out over the coming week.
