Xp Question...

Recommended Posts

Ok, I upgraded from Windows ME, to Windows XP Home Edition. My pc met the requirements, and it proceeded to install. Ok, now windows xp home edition is completley installed on my computer, I register it, and I'm done. But I notice in my start menu, where control panel is, The folder with the hammer and screwdriver icon is there. Why ain't the clipboard w/pen icon there.? Can someone help me change this please, thankyou.

Ok, ya know how on new pc's that have windows xp , When you click the start menu, it brings up the Menu and to the right is My computer, Favorites, Control Panel, Etc..And the control panel icon has the blue clipboard with a check on the board, and pen next to the board

, I want that icon instead of the old control panel icon

Number one rule when replacing an OS:

ALWAYS do a "clean" install. Upgrades suck. They leave a lot of garbage behind from the past OS. If your Windows XP Home Edition is an upgrade CD then you are screwed. You are stuck with the upgrade, unless you can find a way to "hack" that upgrade and make it install XP "cleanly" without the need of a previous OS installed. Theoretically both the Full Installation and the Upgrade CD are the same, except one (the upgrade CD) contains certain "codes" that tell the PC not to install the OS unless you have a previous version on your system.

Anyway, there is hope for you. Just get Norton Utilities 2002 and use the WinDoctor to clean out your registry. It does a darn good job at it. That should pretty much get rid of the crap left behind by Millenium on your registry and should make the system work a bit better.

clean install is possible with the upgrade cd, provided that you have the previous full version of windows. when doing clean install cd with the upgrade cd, you will be prompt to insert any full version of windows to prove you are eligible for the upgrade. then you can insert any original/backup/pirate/fake full version to bypass this step.

however, i've never tried on the new winxp, but this works fine with win98 and winme upgrade in clean install mode
