Vivo's original NEX smartphones were pretty innovative devices, being one of the first to introduce an in-display fingerprint sensor and a motorized pop-up selfie camera. Now, the company has finally unveiled its successor, the NEX 3, which is notable for its "waterfall" display that goes all the way over to the edges of the phone.
The screen is a 6.89-inch 1080p AMOLED panel, and it curves so much around the sides that there's no room for physical buttons. Instead, Vivo is using something called TouchSense, which, paired with a haptic feedback system, will simulate the press of the power and volume buttons. Vivo notably teased a phone with no buttons earlier this year, though that concept looked a bit different.
Another highlight of the phone is the triple-camera setup on the back, which includes a 64MP main camera, one of the first phones on the market to do so. The other two are 13MP each, one with an ultra-wide field of view and another being a telephoto lens.
Aside from that, the phone includes typical flagship specs, including Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset, 8GB of RAM, a 4,500mAh battery with 44W fast charging, optional 5G support, and UFS 3.0 storage. That storage is 128GB for the 4G model, and 256GB for the 5G variant. Of course, it also includes a fingerprint sensor under the display.
The new phones are now available to pre-order in China, costing ¥4998 (roughly $707) for the 4G model and ¥5698 for the 5G model (roughly $806). A variant of the 5G model with 12GB of RAM will go on sale later for ¥6198 ($877). It's not currently known if and when it will come to international markets.
