Safari 1.1.1?

Recommended Posts

Perhaps you can explain what you "absolutely hate" about Safari 1.2 (considering it's relatively minimal changes visually), so that we might help you to learn to love? :)

Yea, I'd quite like to know too. There are very small changes to the visual aspects, and the other under-the-cover changes are only improvements. There's pretty much no downside to 1.2.

Of course that is purely personal opinion. I have really found anything but downsides to 1.2. Aside from the improved dl manager, which isn't that big of a deal, Safari 1.2 is one bloated piece of software. 1.1.1 was quite a bit faster as far as app responsiveness.

What's bloated about it? I must be missing something. Surely the under hood 'improvements' are just that, they wouldn't take a step back... Bloated is usually paired with a multitude of options, or something like that... Not something evident in the small update from 1.1.1 to 1.2...

Alright, this thread was not about my problems with Safari 1.2, but where I could find the older version. I did not want to start a flame thread on 1.2 because I am sure most of you enjoy it and it's all personal opinion. Here are the issues that I am having though.

#1 - All my command buttons in websites have shrunk to a tiny size. I have no idea what caused this and it seems to be with every site. Even here on neowin, typing a reply, all the link, img, quote, code, list, etc... buttons are extremely small. It looks horrible and messes me up when designing sites. Before they were relatively the same size as all other command buttons in windows browsers save the rounded corners, now they are not. Besides that, they look like crap.

#2 - I have having some issues with standard compliant sites. The new version seems not to cache images the same way or something else, but when I visit say a standards compliant xhtml & css site, the header image or any other large image will reload every time. I know it has always done this, but before it seemed to be cached so you would not even notice it. Now, it reloads it from the internet every time. Most of the time I am on a fairly fast DSL line so it is more of an annoyance than anything but I also am on slow connections every once in awhile and this will prove to be just plain unproductive.

#3 - I am highly unimpressed with the new way Safari handles the cntrl+click action. Before I was presented with simple options to download to disk or save to disk. This would promptly download the file to my desktop in the background onto my desktop and I could deal with it later. Now, they have decided to implement "save as" dialogs instead. This pops up a dialog asking me to name the file and choose the location. Usually I just need instant access to the file and I don't care what the filename is. Again, it is just one extra click as long as it is set to desktop, but again just one more annoyance that is unnecessary. I definitely preferred it the other way.

I was only having 2 bug issues in 1.1.1, only 1 of them got fixed. The first was the slow typing bug on neowin reply dialogs, which is slightly faster but still laggy enough to be annoying. The 2nd was the hover bug attribute of CSS, which has been fixed but it was such a minimal bug I am willing to sacrifice it for having the other features back.

I am not usually one to have outdated software on my system, but I have to agree with Super on this one, it just 'feels' bloated. Safari used to feel minimal, now it feels like a full feature browser, something I did not want or need. I don't need a million options when saving a picture, just one.

@WK - My iDisk is joshbryant. Is that all you need and you can upload to my own iDisk?

You need the password for your account to upload to the iDisk, just the username only gives you download capabilities... You might beable to enable uploading though, I am not sure....

I HATE this, and dont know what causes it, neowin is the only IPB site that does this, all others work perfect. I will just keep using Quick Reply though, and switch to omniweb when the final version of v5 is out.

Sorry I dont know where to get 1.1.1, but I will PM you if I find it.

Too little and people complain (I remember you wanting the every link to a new tab function). More features and people say it's bloated. You've got to draw the line somewhere.

If you do an Option-Click on a link it'll download it directly to your desktop without the prompt.

well buhuuu to those who think Safari1.2 is bloated. Here; Have a cookie and a glass of lemonade ;)

What do expect from a company ? That they'll take out functions to make it seem less ? You can only expect programmers to put more funtionality into their products. Not take them out. Just to meet someone's requirements for a minimal browser. I bet Mozilla started as a minimal browser - and look at it now. It's highly capable and a fast browser-on some points.

What the crap is wrong you both? When did you ever hear me complaining? I specifically did not start a thread about my problems with 1.2 because I knew most people were happy with it. I AM NOT COMPLAINING! Let's go over this again.

me> anyone know where I can get a copy of an older version of software because I just liked it better than the new?

you> i am not going to answer your question but I will ask what problems you have with safari?

me> ok, I really didn't want to 'flame' safari because I think it is an amazing program, but here are a couple issues I had with the new version.

you> buhuu, have a glass of lemonade?

What the hell is up with that? Why do you have to be so rude?

to jagged> I don't care how many features Safari has, either way I will be happy! However, if I had a choice between the two, I would choose the one I like best. That is why I asked if anyone had the older one. If not, fine, I still love the new one, if so, great.

to Fonzie> I didn't ask for a cookie, I asked for an older version of a software title. Nowhere in this post did I explain to anyone what I 'expect' software developers to do.

I am sure they added those features in response to feedback that a lot of people were asking for them. I am sure they had very good reason for adding them and many people are happy. I personally just liked the other way better. What is the problem with that?

If I option+click a link it opens it up in a new tab??? Am I missing something?

Man, I love when people don't realize that others are entitled to their opinions, and vigorously attempt to change those others to their own.

People, if he doesn't like 1.2, he doesn't like 1.2. Not everyone even likes Safari to begin with (and other people don't even like Macs :o ). If he has big enough issues that can't be solved, let him be and give him his right to his own opinion.

the very same thing that causes people to think that macusers are all rabid fanboys
