Xenon
IMO its a very good game, better than any online RPG at the moment. you have to spend alot (and i mean alot) of time to progress with it. you will spend most of your time leveling up your character and earning money. the monthly fee is about 12$, and 1$+ for every extra character you create. Bizkit
I think that if you like Final Fantasy games, and like Everquest and what not, then you will like it. Other than that, I wouldn't recommend it.
Starman
I'm having a blast with it. It's not Everquest, but it's the damn closest thing I've found to it. Graphically, it's stunning. The GUI takes a little getting used to. The problem with games like these is that if you don't like it, you're out $50 that you'll never get back. Personally, I find myself going back to EQ, despite the fact that FFXI has the better graphics. I also found that with EQ I want to do more with my character whereas in FFXI you can probably do the same, but there's more of an in-game community with EQ so I feel more comfortable playing EQ. FFXI is still a lot of fun, though. I really like it. I wish that you could take the richness of EQ and the graphics of FFXI and put them together. Maybe EQ2 will be like that. I took screenshots, but they're home and not on my shared drive. Mike
HeartsOfWar
Unfortunately, it turned out like most cheap console port-overs... Pathetic design and terrible camera and interface controls. The graphics may be stunnning, but I didn't notice anything spectacular... maybe I didn't play long enough. 2 weeks???
olaf
FFXI, just like EQ did, needs time to grow. The community is still developing, people are still getting used to the feel of the game. That said, it's not for everyone; you have to be pretty hardcore to get out of the game what was meant to be gotten out of it. I'd give it a shot if I were you. The interface has NOTHING to do with the fact that it's a console port. Pathetic design? Compared to WHAT? How many MMORPGs have you played? I think you just don't "get it". I've been playing EQ for almost 5 years now and you sort of have to "unlearn" what you know about videogames in general to really get into these kinds of games and truly appreciate how they're designed. Better yet, play D&D with pen and paper like I did to REALLY understand why these games are designed this way. Ah, the days of "Temple of Apshai". HeartsOfWar
I'm quite familliar with AD&D... Used to play all the time. I also love the Final Fantasy series... I've practically grown-up with Final Fantasy and can't think of a better video game based RPG; therefore, I think I really do 'GET IT'. As far as MMORPG's... I haven't really played any one for an extended length of time, but I've played quite a few and FFXI has by far one of the worst camera and interface controls I have experienced. They give you the ability to use a mouse and keyboard, but the game is extremely hard to maneuver using both. In between having to constantly reposition the camera, using the hotkeys, accesing the menu, it makes you wish for a gamepad... when you get a gamepad, you're stuck with a console style of play that simply makes the keyboard and mouse look 100 times better... PlayOnline is suitable for console systems, but it's completely unsuitable for a PC. That is one flaw in the design. When they ported the game over, they left 'PlayOnline' as part of the experience when they should have removed it. To my knowledge, you can't download the updates for future storage. This was a big dissapointment... Having to download all those updates took almost an hour after the installation of the game only took barely 10 minutes. As I said, I'm still not sure if you can store them, but if not... big mistake. As I stated, they ported this game from a console and it ended up like most console ports... pathetic design. They should have redone the interface or spent more time re-doing 'PlayOnline' for a PC. Heck... if they spent half the time on the mechanics of the game as they did the graphics, it would be amazing... But they didn't.
