Samsung Galaxy S11 could launch on February 18, use Snapdragon chip in more markets

The latest rumor surrounding the Galaxy S11 series points to Samsung announcing the device on February 18, 2020 at an event in San Francisco. Alongside the Galaxy S11, Samsung will also unveil its foldable clamshell device at the event.

Samsung has been launching its flagship Galaxy handsets ahead of Mobile World Congress over the last few years. Thus, it does seem plausible for Samsung to launch the Galaxy S11 a week ahead of the trade show next year. The Galaxy S10, for example, was announced in the third week of February ahead of MWC 2019 and then went on sale in early March.

Another rumor surrounding the Galaxy S11 points to Samsung using Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 chipset in more markets due to performance issues with the Exynos 990 chip. As per the report, Samsung will be using the Snapdragon 865 chip in the Galaxy S11 units sold in Korea, while the Exynos 990 chip will only be found in the European variants.

Traditionally, Samsung has used Qualcomm's premium chip in its flagship Galaxy S and Note devices in China, Japan, and the United States. In other markets, the company has launched the flagship devices with its in-house Exynos chip.

There has always been a bit of a performance gap between the flagship Snapdragon and the Exynos chips, with the former not only being more powerful but also more power-efficient. However, this time around, the performance gap between the Exynos 990 and the Snapdragon 865 is a bit too big due to which Samsung has decided to use Qualcomm's chip in more markets.

While the Snapdragon 865 features powerful Cortex-A77 cores, the Exynos 990 makes use of the outdated Cortex-A76 cores. The former also offers a more powerful ISP with support for 200MP cameras, while the Exynos 990's ISP is limited to supporting 100MP cameras. The Snapdragon's AI processing is also almost 50 percent faster than the Exynos 990.

The Galaxy S11 is expected to feature a custom 108MP camera with 8K video recording and new camera modes. Leaks also point to the Galaxy S11 packing a 120Hz OLED display, a Penta-camera setup, a beefier battery, and more. Renders of the Galaxy S11 and Galaxy S11+ have also leaked revealing their design.
