It's been well over a year since Microsoft announced it was working on a Windows Insider app, which was meant to be a Progressive Web App. At the time, during a presentation at Ignite 2018, the company explained that the app could be used to access all sorts of information related to the Insider program, including blog posts for new builds and information about the user's own activity as an Insider.
As you might have guessed given how long it's been since then, Microsoft today announced that the Windows Insider PWA has been canceled, and the company no longer plans to test or publicly release the app, also known as Project Catnip. As noted in the blog post for today's build, the company stumbled into some technical limitations, meaning it wouldn't be able to offer the experiences it intended to deliver with the app.
The news is somewhat unfortunate, since some users might have wanted to interact with the Insider program when they're not using PCs with Insider builds. Being a PWA, the app would have allowed any device, including smartphones, to access these features.
There's still some hope, though, since Microsoft says it's still looking into ways it can deliver some of the features that would have been included in the PWA. However, only time will tell how that pans out.
