Trouble with MakeMKV ripping blu-rays ... discs or drive?

I was unsure whether to post this in hardware or software forum. I opted for hardware as i'm also curious about the recommended drives that are mentioned on the MakeMKV forum. I'm here as i got no response over there.

 

Basically i started off my MakeMKV blu ray ripping journey with a Samsung B083L but was having quite a few issues even just reading the disc. I replaced this in January 2019 with an LG BH16NS55.AUAU10B and it was mostly fine. Out of a good number of blu rays i think it just didn't read/failed to rip maybe 2 or 3 discs. Barely anything.

 

I took a break around November 2019 but started ripping again at the turn of 2020. I'm getting a high number of failed rips. Out of 7 discs i've failed on 3-4 of them. MakeMKV just reports an error which when i click the link says it can ONLY be the disc or drive. On one of the discs i put it in to an actual blu-ray player for the TV and it also wouldn't read it - so bad disc i thought. On another disc however, i played it through my PC and was able to skip through the movie perfectly fine ... it just wouldn't rip.

 

We're only 12 months in on the drive so i'm not sure how likely it is that the drive is bad or i'm just getting bad discs.

^^ The above is what showed up after trying one of these discs.

 

 

Some drives get recommended. Frequently:

LG WH16NS40

LG WH16NS60

 

and LG BU40N is another i see mentioned.

 

But i also see you 'need' to flash these drives. For what purpose i don't know. Whether it's anything i would benefit from i don't know. Is it to unlock speed?

 

I'm just wondering if these drives are any better than what i am using and what the chances are i will need to replace my 12 month drive?

 

For the record i don't actually rip anything like 4k or anything like that, they're just standard blu ray discs.

The question really is how likely i am to be needing a new drive or how likely it is that it's the disc at fault. I would be pretty P'd if i bought a new drive only to have the same issue ... so money peed down the drain.

 

The first disc of the year, the drive wouldn't entertain it but then neither would my blu ray player connected to the TV.

Other discs - MakeMKV hasn't worked but the blu ray player connected to the TV plays it (although not sure if plays the full movie) and the drive that wont rip via MakeMKV will also play the movie through a movie playing program (again, unsure if it plays the entire movie without error as i only skipped every so often throughout the movie by clicking the slider). So from this i don't know if it helps determine of the fault is the disc or drive.

Another factor could be that many of these discs are not new and who knows how many times they've been used & how they've been 'cared' for. They appear to be fine. Some times i'll clean them, but that rarely fixes the issue.

The drive is having trouble reading the disc ... so maybe your disc is nasty or scratchy.  

 

Suggestion ... clean the disc and if there are scratches (even small ones) ... forget about it.  You could also read this topic here:

Also, this isn't really an indication that there isn't something wrong with the disc since MakeMKV is trying to make a bit-for-bit copy.

My answer was in regards to your remarks about a new drive and I was suggesting a brand I've had great success with.  If the discs are used and have wear/dirt/fingerprints, etc. that may be the problem as @Jim K said.  Whenever I buy a new blu ray movie I rip it with MakeMKV first before doing anything else.  Good luck getting it sorted.   (Y)

Have you not tried updating the drive firmware? It's always worth trying before definitely pointing the finger or spending any money. This can resolve issues reading certain discs, especially when new copy protections come out :)
