Memory upgrade Motile 141M SL

I bought one of those Motile laptops that was talked about here, https://www.neowin.net/news/techbargains-14-laptop-just-199-440-off-dell-precision-3431-sff-32-1080p-monitor-only-90 from Walmart for my sister in law. Want to upgrade the memory from the current 4GB's to 16GB's but I'm driving myself crazy trying to find EXACTLY what I need. Had the bottom panel of laptop off to look at memory that is in it and I don't think I've ever seen such a small, physical size wise, memory stick, which is the part that's confusing me when looking at images of memory on sites I've looked at.

 

The laptop is a amd ryzen 3 3200u with radeon vega mobile gfx. I know it takes DDR4 2666 memory 2400MHz. 1x SO-DIMM slot

 

Can somebody point me to 16GB stick that they know will work in this thing, please? With all the computer repair people on here, this should be a cinch.

You never saw So-DIMM RAM? Or is it just embedded into the motherboard?

I guess not. Not used to working on newer computers. Usually working on ancient crap that people won't get off of!! Is So-DIMM ram really that small? Thing isn't much bigger than a double a battery.

yeah SO-DIMM laptop memory is about the size of a credit card; slightly shorter. been that way since the Vista days at least so that really shows how long since you've been in a modern laptop lol

The memory stick is smack dab in the middle ... beneath a flappy sheet thing.  Don't confuse the nvme or wireless card for the memory.

Actually it's been that way since the Windows 98/2000 days. So-DIMM isn't anything new.

 

Think he just meant inside a computer. I don't think laptops, except in the early 90's, ever had normal full stick RAM...

It appears that the 2nd ram slot is blocked by the included solid state drive. so to get dual channel memory you have to remove the included ssd and upgrade to an nvme drive to be able to use the 2nd memory slot. Only saw one youtuber mention it.

 

I guess not. just watched another video where he looked for it. and it wasn't there.

I've seen in some the second slot being behind the keyboard... That was a pain...

Exactly why I've never worked on laptop innards to much before. At least this Motile only has 6 lousy screws to open it up.

I saw one where the engineers were a TOAL ###### and put it under the motherboard. So you have to remove the motherboard to change the ram. Even though there was a cover for the wireless card on the bottom, they could have just made the cover bigger to include the ram. total douche bag move.

One thing i've noticed from the few ryzen computers i've seen is that the integrated video consumes a lot of memory. People who bought computers with 8gb of memory only had 5.9 left. People who bought 12GB units only had 9 left. I'd be curious how much usable ram this had out of the box.

I'll let you know that later, when I get back home. Have to admit though, dang little computer is quite snappy for only having 4GB's stock.

From what I know, ANY integrated, or APU graphics is goiing to eat up your RAM.

If I'm remembering correctly from the one time I checked that out, it still had 3.7GB's free setting idle. Hopefully, that dang sometimer's dementia isn't setting in right now though!!
