When Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Flip at its Unpacked 2020 event, it highlighted the new Flex mode which can virtually split the 6.7-inch display of the device into two 4-inch displays for an app. The two parts of the partially unfolded display can then show different types of content from the same app.
For example, the YouTube app can play a video at the top half of the display with video suggestions or comments at the bottom. Similarly, on Google Duo video calls, the Galaxy Z Fold displays the video feed at the top and call controls at the bottom.
The South Korean OEM has also optimized its own apps for Flex mode. The camera app will automatically place the shutter button and other important controls at the bottom half of the display when the device is unfolded into half and the bottom half of the device acts as a tripod.
Samsung worked closely with Google to develop this Flex mode on the Galaxy Z Flip. The good thing is that this feature won't remain exclusive to the Z Flip as Google plans to make it available to other Android OEMs as well. While not mentioned, this feature will probably be baked into the next release of Android. It is unclear if the feature will be called Flex mode on other devices as well or not. Nonetheless, whatever the name is, this mode will be useful on foldable devices as they encourage such split-screen style multitasking workflow.
