A few weeks back, Apple CEO Tim Cook showed off the face shields that the firm was making to assist frontline workers in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally spotted by MacRumors, now, the firm has shared documentation detailing the process of making them.
Among other things, the documentation specifies the materials and design blueprints for the complete face shield. The firm recommends clear PET or PETG for the front shield and forehead band and advises against polycarbonate due to its brittle nature. For the strap, it recommends latex-free silicone.
For large scale manufacturing, fabrication methods, including laser cutting, water-jetting, and die-cutting, complete with the exact dimensions of each part are also mentioned in the detailed specification files. Apple has stated that the documentation is intended only for experts and that the manufacturing "should only be done by professional engineers or machinists in a factory environment."
