US source: North Korean leader in grave danger after surgery

The US is monitoring intelligence that North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, is in grave danger after a surgery, according to a US official with direct knowledge.

Kim recently missed the celebration of his grandfather's birthday on April 15, which raised speculation about his well-being. He had been seen four days before that at a government meeting.

CNN has reached out to the CIA, National Security Council and the State Department for comment. CNN has also sought comment from the South Koreans.

Gathering intelligence out of North Korea is notoriously difficult -- one of the most challenging targets for US intelligence.

North Korea tightly controls any information surrounding its leader, who is treated almost like a deity within the country. His absences from official state media often spark speculation and rumors about his health.

North Korea has no free press and is often a black hole when it comes to the country's leadership. Analysts are heavily reliant on scanning state media dispatches and watching propaganda videos for any semblance of a clue.

Kim last appeared in North Korean state media on April 11. April 15 -- North Korea's most important holiday, the anniversary of the birth of the country's founding father, Kim Il Sung -- came and went without any official mention of Kim Jong Un's movements.

I wouldn't, only because this is a perfect case of the devil you know.  If he is truly dead that means someone who is not a Kim would have to take over and no telling what they might do to strengthen their rule, since they wouldn't have the god status of a Kim.

I’m sure they’ll be just as ######.

While I would both like and fear what would replace him, there have been many reports from the past of his poor health and deaths in the past. While I would love to see a free and united Korean peninsula, until a body shows up and a leader willing to work with the rest of the world (instead of trying to blow it up), it would be to assume that we are jumping the gun.

It's possible his sister, Kim Yo-jong, will take power. She piloted his consolidation of power and is very high up in their intelligence service.

A serious Dragon Lady.

I read a story last year that she lost some favor in the hierarchy over the summits not going exactly how NK thought they would, maybe she overpromised to her brother?   I also don't see them putting a woman in charge, regardless if she's a Kim.  Steven's joke aside, if you believe the stories from defectors North Korea is a "grab them by the stuff" military on steroids.

There's zero chance the NK military machine or its people would accept a woman as the visible figurehead in charge. She is likely to far prefer pulling strings from the background, assuming she survives her brother's death.

He has no adult male children, his wife is apolitical, and his remaining brother (Kim Jong Chol) was passed over for being too femme. If not his sister this could be the end of the Kim family rule.

In that case either the military sets up a ruling committee or it splits and there's a fight for supremacy. That sends refugees fleeing to China and starts their involvement

🍿

Pyongyang, April 22 (KCNA) -- Kim Jong Un, chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, on April 22 sent a reply message to Bashar Al-Assad, president of the Syrian Arab Republic.

Kim Jong Un, in his message, expressed his deep thanks to the president of the Syrian Arab Republic for sending his heartfelt message of greeting reflecting the warm respect for President Kim Il Sung, who is always alive in the hearts of the Korean people and the world progressives, on the occasion of his 108th birth anniversary.

Expressing the belief that the DPRK-Syria friendly and cooperative ties would grow stronger true to the noble intention of the preceding leaders and the desire of the peoples of the two countries, the message wished the Syrian president good health and greater success in his responsible work. -0-

The dear leader can write letters while brain dead? Amazing.

NK would likely just become a vassal state to China.

Worth watching as it goes into some details as to how China is pretty much running the place already anyway, at least economy wise, due to an unofficial economy that Kim has had to allow to spring up lest another famine start.

Japanese media, citing the medical team treating North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, say the failure of initial surgery has left the 36-year-old in a vegetative state.

Amid conflicting reports about Kim's health, Japanese weekly magazine Shukan Gendai reported on Friday (April 24) that a Chinese medical team member on the mission to North Korea briefly explained the situation to its senior writer, Kondm Daisuke.

Currently Trending #1 on twitter is #KIMJONGUNDEAD.

No doubt because of this news, but nothing to prove he is or isn't dead yet.
