Uber-slow Startup

Recommended Posts

OK, First off, I have a lot of computers running linux, I have a small cluster

Anyway, on ONE (just the one) of these motherboards, linux takes an uber-long time to boot, because it looks (and fails to find) HD drives E and G. <There are no drives E and G.... dur>

With the 2.4.x kernel, this happens:

hde: no response (status = 0xfe)

hdg: no response (status = 0xfe)

With 2.6.2 kernel:

hde: no response (status = 0xfe)

hdg: no response (satus = 0xfe)

hde: no response (status = 0xfe), resetting drive

hde: no response (status = 0xfe)

hdg: no response (status = 0xfe), resetting drive

hdg: no response (status = 0xfe)

This is PROBABLY because this particular board supports SATA, yet has nothing on the SATA channels.

I THINK I just need to put a new command for Grub to pass to the kernel, which says "Yo, don't look for those drives, they aint there, stupid!" but I'm not sure what this command would be. :)

btw, is there a way to pause the kernel starting up so you can read anything?

why noit turn the sata off? that would let it go "oh, the bios says there's nothing there so why look?" (as linux goes closer to what the bios says than windows...damn windows...)
