Fred Derf Veteran Posted February 9, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 9, 2004 nah, just download http://apt4rpm.sourceforge.net/ That should do it. Isn't Mandrake at 10 or is it just beta? I personally wouldn't bother Mandrake. Aren't they in major financial troubles? What's the point in a Red Hat clone anyway?

Don't worry about the package management right now, Mandrake is an awesome dstro and you won't be disappointed. Just stick with it and you'll learn everthing you need to know. KiwiNZ
Mandrake is back in the profit zone. I am using Mandrake 9.2 on one of my PCs and its great , the power pack I have has Nvidia support straight from disk to PC It recognises all my hardware which is better than WinXP does on the same machine . chavo
urpmi is included with Mandrake. It is what is called when you use the graphical package management tools. You can also use it from the command line. But as I said, don't worry about package management right now, that will come with time. Besides if you were that concerned with staying up to date you would have started with 9.2 instead of 9.1. There are many new and interesting things awaiting you. I had to learn about dependancies/package management on day one myself. I don't see how you can avoid it unless you stick to the same software that it came with. What fun is that? Someone else suggested apt4rpm to solve the RedHat/Mandrake package management / dependency problems. I'd personally recommend using a distro that had integrated package management support but that's just me.

fobban
If you get tired of mandrake and want to switch disto you should try gentoo. Many says it's not for newbies but as my first linux-distro i managed to install it so i bet you could too. There are very good documentations on how to install gentoo and X. gentoo takes a while to compile tho ^^. Kinda impressed that gentoo also found my NIC's that windows didn't :) Check out their homepage
