An Open Help me Thread

Recommended Posts

First you should know it was a amily member that set my linux up. They gave me RH 9 (i wanted Mandrake). They just kept yelling at me to let THEM do it so that THEY can do it RIGHT. Well he did. Then he got lazy and said no to everything.

Now here are my questions.

1. MP3's. I D-loaded the xmms plugin but it wont install. Ive installed RPM's before and the installer did the same as i did. Only he downloaded the fedora package.

2. He messed with the GIMP. I do alot of picture editing (hobby) and i hate Photoshop. My tool Menu is gone. I got the GIMP menu but the tool is gone. My brush tool is also gone. (the missing ones are the two extra windows. when you open the program)

3. Window sizes on XBoard(Chess) are too big and there is a timer. How cna i make the window smaller and the timer go away.

4. Gaim wont work with my MSN. I loaded the Plugin libmsn.so and added my account but to no avail. it says the pluginj is not supported.

5. He said that Linux cost money to update. So he said to to RHN up2date thing. I aint registered. Could anyone here confirm that it costs money? And if not how can i register?

Any ideas on how to fix these problems? The only reason i let him install RH 9 instead of mandark, and he do it instead of me. Was because he is younger than me and would not stop whining.

For mp3 support install this rpm. I've had troubles with Redhat automatic package installer and have therefore mastered the rpm commandline interface (not by choice).

Open a terminal and cd to the directory you downloaded the rpm in and

rpm -ivh xmms-mp3, etc.rpm

If it complains about dependencies do rpm -ivh --nodeps xmms-mp3.rpm

Ok,

Q.1: Answered

Q.2: All that happened is that the windows were closed. They can be re-opened. One was the brush options. To re-open this, double-click on the brush shape shown near the gradients in the lower right box. Your brush tool will open. When you leave gimp, don't close the brush box. Just exit gimp, and the brush box will open & close with the gimp automatically.

Q.3: Answered

Q.4: I use aMSN (available on SourceForge, here) It works very well, and is aestetically pleasing. ;)

Q.5: Answered, but if you have Fedora, you can switch where up2date looks to the free Fedora yum repositories. :)

Anything else, just ask.

P.S. If you prefer Mandrake, go ahead and download the .isos and install them! ;) (assuming that this is your PC, and you have the permissions/authority to do so)

Just FYI, Mandrake Move is a LiveCD version of Mandrake.

Looks like with your cap, you should have it in 4 hours or so....

As long as you live in the united states, I'd be happy to mail you mandrake on CD-Rs, for free, just because I like to spread linux love. :)

pm me with an address if that sounds good to you ;)

Ok, i got XMMS working. But how do i make it so MP#'s automaticaly run using XMMS instead of Kaboodle?

Also, with that redcarpet. I installed it but how do i run it?

With aMSN i dont know what version to d-load. the rpm, the tar.gz the .so? could i get a more dirrect link or description please?

the gimp is working fine now. Also, how do i get my clock to display NORMAL (NON-Military) time? i tried the date format option under right click but nothing seems to work.

On another note, how the hell do i beat KJumping Block? It is fun but hard!

I use KDE, and you right-click on your MP3, select the "Open With...", then select "other" from the list. At the window that pops up, select your program, and click the "Remember application association for this type of file". All done! :)

I dunno about red carpet. I don't use it (but heard it is nice!)

For the aMSN, download the RedHat 9.0 RPM for the i386 archetecture. It should have all these details in the filename.

You clock is settable for formats, etc. under your user level. Changing time requires root. Right-click and look for the format options. :)

And... KJumping Block?!?!?! huh? lol (if nothing else, get the source code and CHEAT!)

To run red carpet open System Tools - Services and make sure rcd is running.

To launch the program the command is red-carpet. I don't know if it make a menu item for

you or not (i use xd2), but if it does it's probably under internet or system tools and

titled software update.

Ok, mark, what do you use to update your Linux? Does linux even NEED updates? I mean i thought (or the general consunsus is) l;inux is NEAR virus free. And virtualy , but not totaly, un hackable by outsaiders without root password.

I use the RedHat tool up2date on my Fedora box. It gets the latest updates from the repositories online at fedora.redhat.com. I have this scheduled to check daily.

I constantly update my apps and pretty much everything in the OS (except the kernel) as soon as it appears. On the kernel, I wait and hold off updating that until there is a securuity issue fixed, or a new feature I want. (examples are the root exploit in the 2.4 kernel recently discovered, and the nice new feature that RedHat backported to support nprl in the 2.4 kernel)

Updates on Linux occur with MUCH greater frequency than on Microsoft (who tends to hold their fixes until they have a collection to release at once).

To sit back and idly think that just having Linux will make you secure is a big mistake! It is one I made about a year ago - when my system was compromized and used as a SPAM zombie. I caught it within a few hours, but literally hundereds of messages were sent out. Since then, I have taken security seriously.

Security is a process, not a product.

One thing not to forget Widdowmaker is that linux is just as vunerable as Windows.

I must admit i have seen more vunerabilities for linux than windows in my time.

You will find that linux servers are used more for thier stability and performance and not so much for thier security. Although a up-to-date linux system will be pretty damn tight alot more-so than a windows one.

And RHN costs money.??? Or do you use a free version? How long will the free version stay?

The RedHat Network had a free "demo" subscription that was available for anyone with a single PC.

I am not sure if you have RH9, how long the free support is/was good for. It may be expiring soon (or already gone).

Fedora is the spin-off of the home/hobbyist user of RedHat Linux, and they offer free support based off the fact that RedHat (the corporation) does not fund it at all anymore (except providing server space and some development work).

It's a bit of a long story, but the result is Fedora is like what RedHat 10 would have been. However, RedHat split off thier user support to the general "community". RedHat will use the stable Fedora features and code in their Corporate/Enterprise editions of Official RedHat Linux.

I know there is support of the legacy RedHat Linux installations that cost money. I *think* that there may be free support. However, your best solution (if you want to keep along the RedHat path) is to switch to Fedora which should always have free support as long as Fedora is a viable distribution. (it is what I did)

So, summary:

Fedora = Free "RedHat" system

RedHat 9 = older version that is free for self-support (I don't think you are ready for this). Or fee-based for legacy support - because it is 3rd party supported.

Mandrake and others are still available as options for you, and have support as long as they are viable (same as Fedora).

Any Linux setup can be supported by doing it all yourself, for those capable of doing so. If you rely on pre-configured packages, then you must choose your distros based on those issues. :)

Okay, here's a good one. I'm running Xandros 2.0, so far everything works great (and pretty quick, too!) except for the video. I'm running it on a Dell Optiplex GX60. Everything was detected and works fine, but the video. I can only get 16-bit and above colors at 640x480. To use 1024x768 or smaller, I have to use 8-bit colors (FUGLY!!!). It reports that it's using the i810 driver. Any ideas how to change the driver?

Oh, yeah, it has an intel i845G graphics controller.

It doesn't sound like a "driver" issue.

How much RAM does your card have? Enough for full color at the resolutions you want?

If so, then you probably just need to tell Linux that. It is driving the card ok, but thinks your RAM on-board isn't enough for 24-bit color at the resolution you ask for.

sounds like that might be the problem. There's 32MB on-board. How do I tell the OS to use it all?

--Kas

In Xandros, I am not sure. There must a "control panel"-like option for system settings for display.

I guarantee that this change will require your root password.

I figured it out.  My BIOS was set to use only 1MB of RAM for the graphics...after changing it to 32, it worked great!

Thanks for your help.

--Kas

Weird!

Your BIOS has a setup for this? Must be on-board video.

Glad you got it figured out!

[EDIT: Looking back at your previous posts, I see you mentioned having 32MB on board. I thought you were just referring to 32MB on board a regular card. :pinch: ]
